Ankit Ron

At the IPL 2021 auction, Chris Morris (RR) became the most expensive player ever in an IPL auction, while Krishnappa Gowtham (CSK) became the most expensive Indian uncapped player. Cheteshwar Pujara was traded to Chennai Super Kings, and Arjun Tendulkar was acquired by Mumbai Indians.

For the reduced auctions, a total of 292 participants were recruited, including 164 from India and 125 from other countries. The focus will be on big-hitters and slow bowlers now that the IPL has returned to India after being staged in the UAE last year because of the COVID-19 epidemic.

Here is the most expensive player in IPL 2021:

1.   Chris Morris – Rajasthan Royals

The price paid by the Rajasthan Royals for South African all-rounder Chris Morris, who became the most expensive buy-in IPL history, was the greatest surprise of the 2021 IPL auction. It was Rs. 16.25 Crore ($2.2 Million).

Morris was a member of Bangalore's team in last year's competition, although he only played nine games, taking 11 wickets and scoring 34 runs.

That didn't stop the Royals from releasing captain Steve Smith to make room for another international player.

2.   Kyle Jamieson – Royal Challengers Bangalore

Jamieson, a New Zealand all-rounder, has had a fairytale start to his international career and will be the second most expensive buy in the 2021 IPL.

Bangalore triumphed once more, spending a whopping 15 crore ($2.06 million) for the 6ft 8in star.

For the Royal Challengers, who have made some major moves in the auction this year, Jamieson will bring solid right-arm speed and useful lower-middle order hitting.

3.   Glenn Maxwell – Royal Challengers Bangalore

Maxwell was always going to be one of the hottest properties on the market at the 2021 auction, despite his dismal performance for Punjab in 2020.

After winning a bidding war over the Chennai Super Kings, the Royal Challengers Bangalore will be hopeful that their Rs. 14.25 Crore ($1.96 million) investment pays off.

When he's in form, Maxwell is one of the most lethal T20 batsmen in the world, and he'll partner up with Virat Kohli and AB De Villiers in Bangalore.

4.   Jhye Richardson – Punjab Kings

Richardson came into the auction as one of the most sought-after bowling assets, and the bidding battle that ensued did not disappoint.

With a hefty 14 crore ($1.9m) offer for the 24-year-old Australia international, the Punjab Kings finally came out on top.

Richardson is coming off a BBL season in which he took 29 wickets, five more than any other bowler in the competition.

5.   Krishnappa Gowtham – Chennai Super Kings

Gowtham has become the costliest uncapped Indian player in IPL history, breaking Meredith's record for a most expensive uncapped overseas player.

After a three-team bidding battle, the Chennai Super Kings paid $9.25 crore ($1.27 million) for the Karnataka all-rounder, who previously played in the IPL for the Rajasthan Royals and Punjab.

He only played two games for Kings XI last season, but following their large investment, he will undoubtedly play a larger part for the Super Kings this time around.

6.   Riley Meredith – Punjab Kings

The bidding fight for promising Australian pacer Meredith was one of the biggest surprises of the 2021 sale.

Meredith was the most expensive uncapped overseas player in IPL history, having entered the auction with a base price of merely 40 lakh. He was subsequently sold to the Punjab Kings for a staggering Rs. 8 crores ($1.1 million), making him the most expensive uncapped overseas player in IPL history.

Meredith had a strong showing in the BBL lately, collecting 16 wickets in 13 games for the Hobart Hurricanes.

7.   Moeen Ali – Chennai Super Kings

Ali, an England all-rounder, had a rough time with the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2020 campaign, appearing in only three games before being discharged.

That didn't stop the Chennai Super Kings from paying a record-breaking amount for his services in 2021 when they paid $7 crore ($963,000) for the 33-year-old.

Ali's right-arm off-spin and ability to locate the rope from the lower-middle order will be critical for Chennai as they try to rebound from their 2020 setback.

8.   Shahrukh Khan – Punjab Kings

Khan, a batsman from Tamil Nadu, entered the 2021 auction as one of the most intriguing untapped Indian prospects available, and a bidding battle for his services confirmed that.

The Punjab Kings, who were recently rebranded, won out with an Rs. 5.25 crore ($722,000) bid for the 25-year-old, leaving the Delhi Capitals unhappy.

Khan is a big-hitting middle-order batsman who has performed well for Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket.

9.   Tom Curran – Delhi Capitals

Curran played the season with the Rajasthan Royals, but owing to the presence of numerous prominent international stars, he only got five games.

It was unexpected to witness a bidding battle for the England international's talents, with the Delhi Capitals finally coming out on top with an offer of Rs. 5.25 crore ($722,000).

Curran's wicket-taking abilities at the death and his valuable runs from the lower order will be hoped for by Delhi after their loss in 2020 final.

10. Nathan Coulter Nile – Mumbai Indians

Coulter-Nile, an Australian all-rounder was released by the Mumbai Indians following the 2020 IPL season but will return to the reigning champions in 2021.

The 33-year-old, who will start his sixth season in the league in April, was re-signed for Rs. 5 crores ($688,000) by the Indians.

Since the last IPL, Coulter-Nile has only played in the BBL 10 with the Melbourne Stars, where he grabbed 11 wickets in six matches but failed to impress with the bat.
