In 1930, Wallace Carothers , Julian Hill, and other researchers for the DuPont Company studied chains of molecules called polymers , in an attempt to find a substitute for silk. Pulling a heated rod from a beaker containing carbon- and alcohol-based molecules, they found the mixture stretched and, at room temperature, had a silky texture. This work culminated in the production of nylon marking the beginning of a new era in synthetic fibers .

Nylon was first used for fishing line, surgical sutures, and toothbrush bristles. DuPont touted its new fiber as being "as strong as steel, as fine as a spider's web," and first announced and demonstrated nylon and nylon stockings to the American public at the 1939 New York World's Fair.

According to The Nylon Drama authors David Hounshell and John Kenly Smith, Charles Stine, vice president DuPont unveiled the world's first synthetic fiber not to a scientific society but to three thousand women's club members gathered at the site of the 1939 New York World's Fair for the New York Herald Tribune's Eighth Annual Forum on Current Problems. He spoke in a session entitled 'We Enter the World of Tomorrow' which was keyed to the theme of the forthcoming fair, the World of Tomorrow."

First Nylon PlantDuPont built the first full-scale nylon plant in Seaford, Delaware, and began commercial production in late 1939.

The company decided not to register nylon as a trademark, according to Dupont they, "choose to allow the word to enter the American vocabulary as a synonym for stockings, and from the time it went on sale to the general public in May 1940, nylon hosiery was a huge success: women lined up at stores across the country to obtain the precious goods."

The first year on the market, DuPont sold 64 million pairs of stockings. That same year, nylon appeared in the movie, The Wizard of Oz, where it was used to create the tornado that carried Dorothy to the Emerald City.

In 1942, nylon went to war in the form of parachutes and tents. Nylon stockings were the favorite gift of American soldiers to impress British women. Nylon stockings were scarce in America until the end of World War II , but then returned with a vengeance. Shoppers crowded stores, and one San Francisco store was forced to halt stocking sales when it was mobbed by 10,000 anxious shoppers.

Today, nylon is still used in all types of apparel and is the second most used synthetic fiber in the United States.

Stockings (also known as hose , especially in a historical context) are close-fitting, variously elastic garments covering the leg from the foot up to the knee or possibly part or all of the thigh . Stockings vary in color, design, and transparency . Today, stockings are primarily worn for fashion and aesthetics , usually in association with mid-length or short skirts .

Historically, even though the word sock is at least as ancient in origin, what men normally wore were often referred to as stockings, probably especially when referring to longer hose. [1] [2] [ verification needed ] The word stock used to refer to the bottom "stump" part of the body, and by analogy the word was used to refer to the one-piece covering of the lower trunk and limbs of the 15th century—essentially tights consisting of the upper-stocks (later to be worn separately as knee breeches) and nether-stocks (later to be worn separately as stockings ). Before the 1590s, stockings were made of woven cloth. The first knitting machines were for making stockings. [3] The stockings themselves were made of cotton, linen , wool or silk . A polished cotton called lisle was common, as were those made in the town of Balbriggan .

Before the 1920s, stockings, if worn, were worn for warmth. In the 1920s, as hemlines of dresses rose and central heating was not widespread, women began to wear flesh-colored stockings to cover their exposed legs. Those stockings were sheer, first made of silk or rayon (then known as "artificial silk") and after 1940 of nylon .

The introduction of nylon in 1939 by chemical company DuPont began a high demand for stockings in the United States with up to 4 million pairs being purchased in one day. Nylon stockings were cheap, durable, and sheer compared to their cotton and silk counterparts. When America entered World War II , DuPont ceased production of nylon stockings and retooled their factories to produce parachutes, airplane cords, and rope. This led to a shortage and the creation of a black market for stockings. At the end of the war DuPont announced that the company would return to producing stockings, but could not meet demand. This led to a series of disturbances in American stores known as the nylon riots until DuPont was able to increase production. [4]

A precursor of pantyhose made an appearance in the 1940s and 1950s, when film and theater productions had stockings sewn to the briefs of actresses and dancers, according to actress-singer-dancer Ann Miller [5] and seen in popular films such as Daddy Long Legs . Today, stockings are commonly made using knitted wool, silk, cotton or nylon (see hosiery ). The introduction of commercial pantyhose in 1959 gave an alternative to stockings, and the use of stockings declined dramatically. A main reason for this was the trend towards higher hemlines on dresses (see minidress ). In 1970, U.S. sales of pantyhose exceeded stockings for the first time, and has remained this way ever since. [6] Beginning in 1987, sales of pantyhose started a slight decline due to the newly invented hold-ups, but still remain the most sold kind of hosiery.

Stockings are still sometimes preferred to pantyhose in North American English, for a number of reasons. These may include the perception that stockings, and the associated use of garters , lace , high fashion, appliqué and the exposure of the thigh, are more aesthetically pleasing, or sexually attractive and alluring than pantyhose.

Both nylon stockings and pantyhose in being sheer share the advantage of being quick-drying compared to pants. Spare pairs are also easy to carry if they are ruined. If laddered they can be replaced 'one at a time' which provides a cost advantage over tights.

However, stockings have a drawback in colder weather, because more skin is exposed to the cold compared to pantyhose. Also, pantyhose do not require garters or garter belts, and do not need to be adjusted as much, whilst also leaving a smoother line under form-fitting clothing . [7]

In modern usage, stocking specifically refers to the form of hosiery configured as two pieces, one for each leg (except for American and Australian English , where the term can also be a synonym for pantyhose). The terms hold-ups and thigh highs refer to stockings that stay up through the use of built-in elastic, while the word stockings is the general term or refers to the kind of stockings that need a suspender belt (garter belt, in American English ), and are quite distinct from tights or pantyhose (American English).

Tights and stockings are an essential part of every woman's wardrobe. Sheer natural toned tights/pantyhose complement and finish off the perfect office outfit. Sexy stockings spruce up a special dress for a sensual date, and patterned opaques keep you looking funky and stylish without freezing on a winter day!
But tights and stockings were not always as comfortable or accessible as they are today. Hosiery has evolved throughout the ages, and demand and fashion have dictated style, colour and material. As strange as it may seem now, tights and stockings actually originated from men's clothing. Stockings or Hose became widely available in the 16th century with the invention of the knitting machine. They were most commonly made from wool, luxurious versions were available in silk or cotton, and they were worn by men under breeches. It was not until the early 20th century, that women's fashion changed and it became socially acceptable for women to show their legs.
The invention of Nylon in 1939 revolutionised women's undergarments. As tights were not yet invented, stockings were the garment of choice and industrial advances made them widely available, albeit not during the war. Lycra had not yet been added to stockings so there was not much 'give' to them and they did not stretch. As such, they were available in what was known as 'Fully fashioned', meaning different sizes, to follow the shape of the leg.
By the early 60's Lycra was added to stockings, making them more comfortable and a better fit for the wearer. It was also at this time that in California, Allan Gant Senior developed the first 'tights'. Known as 'pantyhose', as derived from the American 'panties' - a term used for knickers, referring to the opaque section at the top, and 'hose' to refer to the stockings. These 'pantyhose', were literally stockings and knickers sewn together. They were designed to eliminate the need for several different layers of undergarments. Pantyhose production was perfected by the mid sixties, and the product became 'seamless'. This coincided with the rise of the mini skirt. Allowing women were to wear tights, that covered the leg, as a alternative to stockings, which would have been exposed under the short skirt fashion of the times. Tights became the new must have product and the sale of stockings dramatically declined.
In the UK, 'tights' is used as a generic name regardless of weight/texture/denier of the material. However, in America the term 'pantyhose' is used to distinguish tights of a 'lighter' denier. Pantyhose refers to tights which are either seamless waist to toe, or have a opaque section at the top. They are usually available in 'nude' or 'natural' shades. Americans use the term 'tights' to refer to thicker, opaque garments, including those of the woolen variety.
Advances in technology and ever changing trends in fashion, have seen a vast array of tights available on the market. Fishnet, peep toe, thigh slimming, tummy controlling and maternity tights are all available, and they can be purchased in every conceivable colour.
