James Dean starred in the film adaptation of the John Steinbeck novel East of Eden , for which he received a posthumous Oscar nomination. Dean's next starring role as an emotionally tortured teen in Rebel Without a Cause made him into the embodiment of his generation. In early autumn 1955, Dean was killed in a car crash, quickly becoming a film icon whose legacy has endured for decades. His final film, Giant , was also released posthumously.
James Byron Dean was born on February 8, 1931, in Marion, Indiana, to Winton Dean and Mildred Wilson. Dean's father left farming to become a dentist and moved the family to Santa Monica, California, where Dean attended Brentwood Public School. Several years later, Dean's mother, whom he was very close to, died of cancer, and Dean's father sent him back to Indiana to live on his aunt and uncle's Quaker farm. During this time, Dean sought counsel from his pastor, the Rev. James DeWeerd, who influenced his later interest in car racing and theater. The two formed an intimate relationship that is rumored to have been sexual.
In 1949, Dean graduated from high school and moved back to California. He attended Santa Monica City College for a time, but eventually transferred to University of California, Los Angeles, and majored in theater.
After appearing as Malcolm in the school's production of Macbeth , Dean dropped out of UCLA. His first television appearance was in a Pepsi Cola commercial, while his first big-screen parts, uncredited, were in 1951's Fixed Bayonets! and 1952's Sailor Beware , a comedy starring Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin . To make ends meet, Dean worked as a parking lot attendant at CBS Studios, where he met Rogers Brackett, a radio director who became his mentor, with the two also said to have been romantically attached.
In 1951, Dean moved to New York City and was later admitted to the Actors Studio to study under Lee Strasberg , though the two were reputed to not have gotten along. Dean's career began to pick up, and he performed in such 1950s television shows as Kraft Television Theatre, Omnibus and General Electric Theate r , with a high school fan club formed after his appearance as a contemporary John the Apostle in 1951's Hill Number One: A Story of Faith and Inspiration . The fledgling actor was also garnering a reputation for being unstructured in his technique, though the work continued to come.
After a Broadway role in the short-lived 1952 drama See the Jaguar , Dean's success as an Arab boy in 1954's The Immoralist led to interest from Hollywood.
Over the ensuing months, Dean starred in three major motion pictures, beginning with the 1955 film adaptation of John Steinbeck 's novel East of Eden . Director Elia Kazan chose Dean after the actor met with Steinbeck, who thought him perfect for the part. Many of Dean's scenes in the film were unscripted improvisations. He would eventually be nominated for an Academy Award for the role, making him the first actor in history to receive a posthumous Oscar nomination.
In his next film, Dean starred as the agonized teenager Jim Stark in 1955's Rebel Without a Cause , a part that would define his image in American culture. He co-starred in Rebel with Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo , with the film focusing on the emotional alienation of three youngsters and the devastating drama that ensues from adolescent rivalry.
Dean then landed a supporting role to Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson in the epic, intergenerational family saga Giant , with Hudson playing a well-off, racially prejudiced ranch owner to Dean's impoverished, racially prejudiced ranch hand. Giant , which was Dean's last film, had a running time of more than three hours and saw the actor portray a character whose fortunes change over the decades. He died before production was complete, with Giant ultimately released in 1956. Dean received an Academy Award nomination for this role as well, making him the only actor in history to receive more than one Oscar nomination posthumously.
In late 2019, it was announced that a CGI version of Dean would return to theaters in the Vietnam War-era film Finding Jack , based on a novel by Gareth Crocker. While some prominent actors like Captain America star Chris Evans expressed their displeasure with the idea of using a digitized Dean, Finding Jack co-director Anton Ernst defended the choice by noting there were "still a lot of James Dean fans worldwide who would love to see their favorite icon back on screen."
When Dean wasn't acting, he was a professional car racer. On Friday, September 30, 1955, Dean and his mechanic, Rolf Wuetherich, drove Dean's new Porsche 550 Spyder to a weekend race in Salinas, California. At 3:30 p.m., they were stopped south of Bakersfield and given a speeding ticket. Later, while driving along Route 466, a 23-year-old Cal Poly student named Donald Turnupseed, after turning at an intersection, collided with Dean's Porsche. The two cars hit each other almost head-on, with the Spyder devastated from the impact. Wuetherich was seriously injured but survived, while Dean was killed almost immediately. He was 24.

James Dean was the icon of millions, his brooding sensuality made him an instant star, but his smoldering looks hid a secret pain.
Iconic 50s actor James Dean is still a legend 65 years after his death, even though he only made three films in his entire career.
His mystique is the fruit as much his monumental talent, as the rumors of his tormented love life which might have led to his tragic death at the age of 27.

Dean skyrocketed to fame in Hollywood. He started his career at the age of 22 after dropping out of UCLA, five years later, he was the industry's hottest leading man, scooping up roles contested by the likes of Paul Newman and Marlon Brando.
His first movie, "East of Eden" made him an instant star. Dean's boyish good looks, and his intensity, coupled with a disturbing fragility dominated the screen. Audiences swooned, and the studios showered him with offers.

But behind the image hid a young man still dealing with the pain of losing his mother, Mildred Marie Wilson to cancer when he was just 9. His father had been unable to cope and had sent Dean to live with relatives on a farm in Indiana.

A biography of Dean, "James Dean: Tomorrow Never Comes" written by Darwin Porter and published in 2016, detailed his constant search for love, which led to countless affairs with both men and women, many of them Hollywood stars.

Among his conquests was the equally volatile and vulnerable Marylin Monroe, who confessed that she and Dean had even spoken of marriage. Monroe described Dean as "romantic and loving" but stated :
“It wouldn’t work. We’d end up destroying each other.”

His second leading role was in the iconic "Rebel Without a Cause" opposite Natalie Wood. The film cemented his growing fame, and also provided him with another conquest. Wood confessed that she and Dean had had a love affair, and revealed why it came to an end. She said :
“Sometimes Jimmy liked to hurt his partner and be hurt. I don’t go in for that.”

Dean was desperately trying to fill in the void left by his great love Pier Angeli . He met the Italian actress in January 1954 at the studio while filming "East of Eden." Dean and Angeli were in love, but her domineering mother disapproved. Dean admitted that he wasn't ready for commitment, and said :
“I wouldn’t marry her unless I could take care of her properly. And I don’t think I’m emotionally stable enough to do so right now.”

Dean was shattered when Angeli announced her engagement to singer Vic Damone in October 1954 and married him a month later. A disbelieving Dean is said to have sat on his motorbike, watching the church from across the street during the ceremony.

Hollywood biographer Joe Hyams, claimed in his 1992 biography "James Dean: Little Boy Lost," that Dean had told him that Angeli had revealed that she had married Damone because she was pregnant. The weeping Dean confided that he believed the child was his, and not Damone's.

After the end of the romance with Angeli, Dean threw himself into his passion for racing, yet another activity he indulged into extremes. His reckless driving was a worry to friends and the studio, and another of his lovers, singer Eartha Kitt revealed that a ride with Dean in his Spyder had been "a nightmare" she thought she might not survive.

In September 1955, Dean was finished filming his third film, "Giant," opposite Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor. Once again, Dean had sought a replacement for Angeli in the arms of a leading lady. Dean told Taylor's husband Michael Wilding:
“I’ve fallen in love with your wife. She is going to divorce you and marry me.”

But shortly after, Dean died, speeding down a country road at night, and crashing into a car turning onto the thoroughfare. Taylor was shattered and had a breakdown after his death, and would only speak of their relationship years later, in an interview she insisted should remain unpublished until her death.

The death of James Dean the man, was the birth of the legend. The young actor who had a brief career in television, and a three-movie career in film, has become a symbol of reckless, romantic rebellion to successive generations.
Sadly, the lover of so many had sought love desperately and unsuccessfully his whole life. James Dean will forever be remembered as the unfulfilled promise, the young man who might have been the greatest of all Hollywood stars, lived too fast and died too young.

The Truth About James Dean's Alleged Relationship With Liz Sheridan

By Frank F. / Feb. 25, 2022 12:21 pm EDT
Today, Liz Sheridan is perhaps best known for playing Jerry Seinfeld's mother, Helen, in the hit sitcom " Seinfeld ." Four decades before she made her debut on the sitcom, though, Sheridan allegedly had a romantic relationship with the iconic actor James Dean. She detailed the alleged romance in the memoir " Dizzy & Jimmy: My Life With James Dean: A Love Story ," which was released in 2000 by Regan Books.
According to a Publisher's Weekly review, Sheridan's "feelings for Dean, her pain upon their separation and on his untimely death a few years later, are sweetly rendered and seem genuine, although the details are filtered through a romanticized lens." In other words, the book may be a true account of a beautiful lost romance, or it may be a pre-Tumblr fan fiction. Because Dean himself never confirmed the romance and was not alive to confirm or deny Sheridan's claims, the world may never know for sure whether the alleged affair ever happened. Even so, here are some of the more compelling details of Sheridan's account of her love story with the all-American rebel .
"A long time ago, when I was a young dancer in New York City, struggling to make it on Broadway, I fell in love with Jimmy Dean and he fell in love with me," Liz Sheridan wrote of James Dean in " Dizzy & Jimmy: My Life with James Dean: A Love Story ." "When we fell in love, he was just my Jimmy. A skinny, nearsighted kid not yet twenty-one, whose glasses always seemed to be sliding down his nose. He was shy and broke and he mumbled. And I adored him."
Sheridan went on to detail how she allegedly met Dean in the fall of 1951 in New York in the theater district residence hall where she lived. Dean was a struggling actor at the time, although he was accepted into the Actors Studio in November 1951, around the time Sheridan allegedly met him, as noted by Publisher's Weekly . Sheridan describes Dean as an often-cheesy, touchy-feely, and even nerdy guy. "I was an inch taller and two years older," she wrote, "but somehow he always made me feel that I was his treasured little girl."
In the book, Sheridan claims that she and Dean were even engaged at one point, before his rising career led to the fall of their relationship. She also describes her grief following Dean's untimely death in 1955 , a few years after their split. "
