Whitney Cummings Shared Her Own Topless Photo After an Extortion Attempt

Far too many female celebrities still have to deal with hackers threatening to leak their private photos, but some women are starting to fight back. In June 2019, Bella Thorne shared her own topless photo to thwart an attempted leak, tweeting, "I took my power back." And most recently, when someone tried to extort comedian Whitney Cummings over a topless photo, she took matters into her own hands and posted it.
On August 12th, 2019, Cummings tweeted that in an April Instagram Story, she had accidentally posted (and later deleted) a photo showing her nipple. She shared that some people had taken screenshots of the image and were trying to blackmail her with it. But Cummings would not let herself be bullied, and she posted the picture herself before anyone else could.
She also shared a screenshot of the attempted extortionist's threat.
In a series of follow-up tweets, Cummings wrote that she was not going to name the people trying to blackmail her because "some of them might be dumb kids." She also shared some powerful words about women in the public eye.
"When a woman in the public eye is extorted, we have to spend time, money and energy dealing with it, hiring lawyers and security experts, and living with a pit in our stomach about when and how we will be humiliated," she wrote. "Y'all can have my nipple, but not my time or money anymore."
Other comedians and writers chimed in with messages of support for her.
What Cummings did is a badass way to take control of her own narrative, but no one should ever have to deal with threats like this. It's infuriating to think that many women have to live with the fear that their photos will be leaked.

1) In April I accidentally posted an insta story that showed nipple. Once I realized, I deleted. The people who took screen grabs are trying to get money from me, some said they have offers to sell them, some are asking for money to not post the photo.

I woke up to so much support around the nipple photo incident. It means the world to me and I’m sorry that the pic I had to release looks like I’m having a home birth.
Getting ahead of any photo leaks...here are the most embarrassing things anyone could leak from my iCloud: my screen grabs from a couple years back when I was clearly going through something.
I'm not posting the names of the people trying to extort me because some of them might be dumb kids. I wouldn't want the stupid ideas I had when I was a teenager to follow me around forever or else every time someone Googled me, they'd see me shoplifting a NO FEAR t-shirt. .

Top's off! Whitney Cummings shared a topless photo of herself casually lounging without a shirt on Thursday, July 30, just three days after she discussed her 25-pound weight gain on the Today show.
"Thank you @karlawelchstylist for the shoegasm," she captioned the Instagram picture, which features the 2 Broke Girls creator in form-fitting cropped skinny jeans and Christian Louboutin heels, surrounded by a sea of designer shoes. Cummings, 32, glances at the camera as her topless reflection is displayed in the adjacent mirror of her closet.
The Whitney actress chose to bare her bod just three days after her Today show appearance, when she was asked by hosts Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford why she looked so different.
"I did this weird thing that nobody likes to do anymore where I gained weight," Cummings replied. "I gained, like, 25 pounds, which I think I needed to. I was way too skinny before. Here's the thing… when you're on television, you get confused. I looked like I was passing away, like I was so skinny [that] it's not attractive."

Following her newsworthy stop by the morning show, Cummings posted a still of herself lunging between a kitchen island and sink. "There is a strong chance I will never be allowed back to The Today Show," she captioned the funny snap.
