Almost Like An Unintentional Comedy
White Bird in a Blizzard is set in the 1988, and tells the story of Kat Conner, played by Shailene Woodley, a 17 year old girl who seems to live a normal life until her perfect, homemaker mother, Eve, played by Eva Green, disappears one day. Having lived in a dysfunctional relationship with her mother, she feels little pain or sadness towards her mother's absence. She doesn't even blame her father, Brock, played by Chris Meloni, as he is too much of a wimp to have anything to do with her disappearance. As a few years go by, and Kat goes to College, she begins to realize just how much her mother's disappearance really impacted her, as she finds herself investigating and discovering the truth about what really happened. White Bird in a Blizzard is based on a novel by Laura Kasischke and adapted by director Gregg Araki. Simply put, it is a somewhat bizarre, silly, sex romp, featuring a great lead performance by Shailene Woodley. This film fits director Gregg Araki's usual teenage sex and violence overtones, and features some pretentious and overbearing dialogue that almost comes off as an unintentional comedy. There are also some interesting things in this film, directing-wise: an unusual opening with a shot of Eve, the mother, on her back and a recurring dream sequence throughout involves Kat seeing her mother naked in the snow (hence the title). This is actually supposed to be a symbol for the film and a clue to the audience about the truth of the mystery. Additionally, the film's use of flashbacks is both bizarre and fascinating at the same time, making the relationship between mother and daughter all the more dysfunctional and creepy. In the lead role, Shailene Woodley demonstrates her talents portraying a teenager who really doesn't know who to trust. The flashback where her mother comes into the room and tries to psychically assault her features some very fine acting by Woodley. In comparison, Eva Green appears more "over the top' and gives a notably "hammy" performance, portraying a clearly disturbed woman. In one of the scenes, for example, when she tries to act younger than her age and then breakdowns, it is mildly disturbing and gloriously cheesy all at the same time. The other actors in the film are good, especially Chris Meloni as the father who has a secret to hide, and Angela Bassett as a psychiatrist. Overall I thought this was interesting film, but I don't know what to really make of it.

While many parents might cringe at seeing their child having sex on the big screen, Shailene Woodley's parents 'loved it.'
The 22-year-old actress is busy promoting her new film White Bird In A Blizzard where she has a intimate scene with 45-year old actor Thomas Jane.
'My parents saw the film. I thought it might be awkward, but they both loved it,' Shailene said, according to New York Post's Page Six .

Woodley's parents, Lori and Lonnie, are not in the film business but work as educators as a middle school counsellor and high school principal.
They divorced when Shailene was 15 but have clearly been supportive of her dramatic career ever since.
The actress also said that she felt comfortable doing the scene after accepting she has a great body.
'It's crazy. And sort of wrong. But I felt great doing it. I was not fully robed. And our bodies had no make-up. Who needs make-up? I'm only 22. My boobs are great. They don't need any help,' the actress said.

White Bird In A Blizzard is based on Laura Kasischke's novel and is set in 1988 where Woodley's teen character's life falls into disarray when her mother (Eva Green) disappears.
This positive attitude towards her body falls in line with Shailene's comments about not women-bashing.
'Women should be there for other women,' the Divergent star said.
'It's such cruelty and competition out there. Women must help other women. Not say those ugly things about the others just out of their insecurity. I don't believe in that.'
White Bird In A Blizzard is released in the US on October 24, 2014 but a UK cinematic release date is yet to be announced after it's premiere at the BFI London Film Festival

The drama is set in 1988 and is about a teenage girl's life that is thrown into chaos when her mother disappears.
The Divergent star tells New York Magazine that she got some flak for her nude scenes in the film, but she thinks it was needed. "Everyone was freaked out because I'm nude, but in real life, when I have sex, I'm naked," the 22-year-old actress said. "I don't have a bra on, and I don’t usually have panties on. So let’s make a real movie! Let's bring truth to the scene! I didn't want to be exploited, but this girl--like most girls when they first have sex--doesn't know what she’s doing. I wanted their first kiss to be sloppy, teenagerish making out. When you're younger, you think you know what to do, but you really don't."
Woodley also chimed in about being compared to The Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence. "As women, we are constantly told that we need to compare ourselves to a girl in school, to our co-workers, to the images in a magazine. How is the world going to advance if we're always comparing ourselves to others? I admire Jennifer Lawrence, but she's everyone's favorite person to compare me to."
She added, "Is it because we both have short hair and a vagina? I see us as separate individuals. And that's important. As women, our insecurities are based on all these comparisons. And that creates distress."
