Before we share our full list of white cat breeds, you may be wondering what’s the difference between an albino cat and a white cat breed? Albinism is caused by a genetic mutation, which affects the levels of melanin in the cat's skin, coat and eyes. Albinism occurs when both parents carry the recessive gene. The main characteristic of an albino cat is an unblemished white coat, blue/red eyes and pink skin on the nose, eyelids, ears and paw pads.
In addition, cats with albinism are susceptible to suffering from both deafness and blindness. Albino cats are also incredibly sensitive to prolonged and intense sun exposure.
Albinism in cats can occur in cats of any breed, even those that do not generally carry white coats. Because of this, not all white cats are considered albino. A white ‘non-albino’ cat can have eyes eyes of different colors. They won't have the albino gene and won't have associated health problems. The only similarity is they have white fur.
It can be difficult to differentiate between a white cat and an albino cat. This is because albinism can vary to a certain degree. For example, all albino cats will have blue in their eyes , but not all will be noticeably red. So a white cat with green eyes won't be an albino. We can help determine by looking at the skin. A true albino cat will have very pink skin, but a white cat can have skin of a grayish or blackish tone.
