I'm finding myself enthralled by my personal pick for the greatest horror movie ever The Evil Dead from 1981. The Evil Dead, more and more each time I watch it. This is the case for the sequels (Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness) and soft reboot from 2013, that I would not consider a true remake, but I would classify as one of the greatest remakes of horror movies if I did. I am also noticing something different about this tale of gruesome and often hilarious stories of demon possession with every viewing.
My most recent rewatch of the first four Evil Dead movies in preparation for the quickly approaching five-parter, Evil Dead Rise -- the one film I am anticipating the absolute most -- was no exception. A few might dismiss The Evil Dead as just anther cabin in the woods horror film. However, a closer study of the terrifying film's seminal masterpiece reveals how complicated director and writer Sam Raimi's screenplay is. Consider, for instance the clever use of foreshadowing, an element of the storytelling that I hate to admit didn't come to my attention until my most recent revisit. I am awed by the way the film hints at Cheryl Williams' (Ellen Sandweiss) eventual fate when she sees the cellar door opening and closing on its own early on and when her older brother Ash (Bruce Campbell, in the character that made him a cult horror film icon), finds a drawing within the Necronomicon that is reminiscent of the book when the book "comes to life" towards the closing.
It's just that I never really noticed the way blood flows from a possessed Scotty's (Richard DeManincor, also known with the role of Hal Delrich) stomach wound like a faucet up to now. But this was the first time I focused on the incident. It seems like I was mesmerized by the image of blood that bears an equivocation to cherries Kool-Aid instead of corn syrup dyed with color. I'm sure I'll appreciate the uniqueness of it more now than ever even though the blood is more precise in the other parts of the franchise.
Another shot from the visceral finale in The Evil Dead that has always captivated my attention is when arms exploding appear from Cheryl and Scotty's defeated Deadite self. For years, I just chalked this up to being an additional example of the extraordinary visual skills of director Sam Raimi, but it occurred to me during this rewatch that these were demon arms and, more specifically, of the demons who possessed Ash's pals. Have you ever seen something as terrifyingly bizarre in a supernatural horror movie featuring demonic possession such as the one in The Exorcist? I don't think so.
