What's The Reason? Private ADHD Titration Is Everywhere This Year
Private ADHD Titration
There is a current national shortage of medications to treat ADHD symptoms. This is due to manufacturing problems and an increase in demand worldwide.
Our service provides private ADHD adjustment instead of waiting for NHS funding through Right to Choose. Our assessment fees include the cost of one prescription.
Titration
A highly skilled consultant psychiatrist will conduct a comprehensive assessment of your ADHD. This will include medical history and an assessment using the typical ADHD rating scales and questionnaires.
After your examination, you will be advised whether medication may be beneficial in your case. This will take place at your follow up appointment (which can be done in person via video link or by telephone). Your physician will go over the various options for medications available. If you decide to start taking medication, we will help you to titrate your dose to ensure the best balance of benefits and side effects for you.
This process can take several weeks, and requires gradually altering your child's dosage until the appropriate balance has been achieved. It's not uncommon to have to titrate up to three different medicines before you find the one that best suits your child's ADHD. It is essential for parents to take part in this process of titration, and keep an eye on their child's behavior so that they can let the doctor know whether the medication is helping or causing adverse effects.
If you do not decide to return to NHS care and have decided to return to NHS care, your medication will be provided with a private prescription which you will need to pay for at the pharmacy (this is not included in your consultation fees). You'll need to attend six-monthly appointments to monitor your medication. This includes blood pressure and pulse measurements. Annual reviews are also mandatory.
Follow-up appointments
Once the evaluation has been completed, you will be able to schedule follow up appointments with your psychiatrist, if necessary. Typically, the appointment will take place through a video call using zoom but in certain circumstances it may be possible to have an audio-only consultation (again at an additional cost).
We will then discuss treatment options and choose the most appropriate, customized ADHD medication titration. This will include a discussion and review of your dosage of medication and any side effects that you might be experiencing. The cost for these titration sessions is PS150 for face-to-face sessions and PS60 for online or phone video consultations. The pharmacy will be charged for any charges for medication.
The psychiatrist will ask questions regarding your family history and the effects of your ADHD symptoms on your life and any mental health issues you might be suffering from. ADHD can be a hereditary condition, so it's important to assess your family history in order to determine if you are at a greater risk of developing this disorder.
It is important that you are honest and truthful with your doctor during this assessment, as the information they receive will be used to determine whether your ADHD meets the diagnostic criteria. This is a crucial step, as an incorrect diagnosis could lead to inappropriate medication prescription.
If you've decided you'd like to be treated for your ADHD, we will then schedule a follow-up appointment with one of our psychiatrists who specialize in this area. This can be scheduled at the time of your diagnosis if you are keen to begin treatment right away, or within two weeks if prefer to take time to consider the implications of your diagnosis and the options that are available to you.
We suggest that if are unsure of your preferences, you speak with your GP prior to scheduling your private appointment. Certain providers have different policies regarding whether they require an GP letter. Find out if your GP accepts the Shared Care Agreement, which means you will be referred to them once you leave the clinic for prescription medication.
Medication
For many people who seek a private diagnosis of ADHD, medication is a crucial element of their treatment. Finding an appointment with an NHS psychiatrist can be a challenge and lengthy. NHS waiting lists are notoriously long, and GPs are often reluctant to refer patients on to specialist services.
Requesting your GP to refer through Right to Choose is one way to avoid this (see psychiatry UK and ADHD 360). This means that you can select a provider that offers an assessment and titration service. This can reduce your wait time considerably and can be more convenient if you are working and have a busy schedule.
After you've been recommended by this method the doctor you choose will examine you and decide whether or not you need to be monitored for a dose of medication. You'll have to complete forms that differ by provider however the most commonly used ones are self-reporting questionnaires and medical histories dating to your childhood and into adulthood. They will help your physician identify any factors that might indicate that you shouldn't be taking ADHD medication if prescribed.
If you are being titrated on medication, it will typically be a combination of non-stimulant and stimulant medications. They will be carefully tested and monitored to determine the most suitable combination for you, taking into consideration any existing conditions you have. The titration process can be lengthy and may need some additional appointments before you are stable on your dose.
Depending on the type of medication you are taking, follow up appointments could be scheduled monthly or quarterly. Your doctor will ensure whether you are stable on the medication, record any adverse reactions you've experienced and make any needed adjustments to ensure that you remain on a safe dose. You will be required to attend an annual review and a routine health exam that includes blood pressure, pulse, and weight measurements.

For some, it may be that they are satisfied with their medication and don't need a further discussion about their titration. If ADHD titration required to discuss your titration plan or treatment plan further, it is possible that you will be referred back to the private doctor that performed your initial evaluation. If this happens, the titration appointment will be included in their consultation fee, and they will be given their medication on private prescription (see Consultation fees above). This can cost more than a prescription from the NHS because the pharmacy will charge you for the medication.
