IN 2021, the eagle sex position was the top choice for people living in London and it's back in the conversation after coming up on ITV's Love Island.
But what is it, and is it popular? Here's all you need to know.
The eagle sex position has become increasingly popular and there's not just one way to do this bedroom move.
There's at least five different ways, so there's a chance you may have done this position without even realising the name for it.
The most well-known eagle position is the spread eagle.
This is where one partner lies on their back with their legs spread apart, or spread eagle.
It's said to be similar to the missionary position.
You can find out how to experiment while staying in your comfort zone with a modified version of missionary here.
With the spread eagle, rather than having the receiver flat on the bed, as in classic missionary, the person has their legs wide and in the air.

For this variation, the penetrating partner should sit on a flat surface and spread their legs.
The receiving partner then climbs on top.
From this position, to get into the exposed eagle the receiving partner will arch backwards and lie on top of their partners legs.
If you need extra stability you can slide their legs down to either side of your partners hips.
This variation is said to be better for stimulating the G-spot .
This variation requires quite a lot of stamina and flexibility.
Firstly, the receiving partner lies on their back and bends their legs as far as they can go - this may feel somewhat like a particularly challenging yoga position.
The penetrating partner will then lean across them, as if they are about to start doing press-ups.
This position can be done vaginally or anally - but you should be sure to start out slow.
This a further variation on the one above, with the partner on top facing the other way.
This might just be the most difficult variation on the eagle.
Usually done against a wall with both partners standing - one will then wrap a leg around the other.
This variation on the position was being frantically searched across the country after Love Island 2022 contestant Paige Thorne said her favourite position was "the broken eagle".
According to her, it involves on person lying down with one leg bent and the other straight out, while the other person on top.
The show also introduced many people to the Viennese oyster
after the position was alluded to in the latest series of the show.
In order to find out the UK's favourite sex positions, the experts in OnBuy's sex toy division surveyed customers from each town or city with a population of over 100,000 people.
Missionary came out top (or should we say bottom?) in 11 cities including Bournemouth, Exeter, Doncaster and Lincoln in 2020.
That said, DOUBLE this number of cities chose The Eagle as their favourite sex position.
Not only did Londoners say The Eagle was their favourite but 36 per cent of people in the East of England also chose it too.

Truthfully, there are only so many sex positions you can do comfortably (and enjoyably) without straining yourself. The idea that you have to be acrobatic or athletic to have good sex is kind of ridiculous. I’m trying to have an orgasm , not run a marathon, you know? Just because a sex position involves twisting your legs all the way around your body like a frickin’ snake doesn’t make it better, hotter, or more “sexy.” In fact, you might pull a muscle and wind up in the ER explaining to a stone-faced nurse named Kyle why you’ve come in today. No one wants that. “I was boning, Kyle, OK!?”
With all that being said, there are plenty of ways to alter your regular go-to moves to give them a little ~spice.~ Good sex involves a willingness to explore and try new things. And the new things don’t need to be that intense to be fun. This is where the Spread Eagle sex position comes in. This simple upgrade to our classic missionary position makes it feel like a whole new adventure.
By now you’re probably horny for an explanation on what this position is. The Spread Eagle is the missionary position, only with slightly more oomf . The Spread Eagle position is "where the receiving partner lays on their back with their legs straight up, knees unbent, and out forming a V," explains Dr. Lanae St.John, a board certified sexologist and author of Read Me: A Parental Primer for “The Talk" . "The inserting partner then mounts over [them]. It's a modified form of missionary, except with legs straight up.”
It’s “a position to allow [for] deep penetration,” says sex and relationship therapist Cyndi Darnell .
Before going deep, be sure that the “receiving partner is FULLY aroused," St. John says. "A person with a vagina will receive this position better if they are fully aroused so that the necessary ‘tenting’ can occur and make this deep penetration more comfortable."
This is also a fantastic position to incorporate a vibrator , if your partner has a clitoris . They can either use it on themselves or, if you’re especially dexterous, you can use it on them. For partnered intercourse, my current favorites are the Lora DiCarlo Drift (it even warms up by itself, like, what?!), the Zumio X, or the Le Wand Petite . You can use any toy that is small and easy to maneuver between two bodies.
Darnell says there’s also a bit of fun psychological play going on in this position. Since you’re trying something “new,” it can feel extra sexy, exciting, and “a little bit edgy”.
Plus, the visual aspect provided by this position can be a real turn on, St. John points out. “The genitals of the receiving partner are on full display so it can be visually appealing for the inserting partner,” she says.
If the receiving partner is into it (and it’s comfortable for them), the inserting partner can try holding onto their ankles to lift their bum slightly when inserting their penis or dildo. With anal sex , it’s all about angles and being sure everyone is properly aligned (but that’s also true of all sex, of course).
“Start slow and gently as you would for anal any time, and as [the bottom’s] butt hole expands to receive, experiment with the eagle to see how it feels and if your body enjoys it,” Darnell says.
Try different speeds and depths, and communicate with each other to be sure everyone is having a good time. St.John suggests using a pillow as a helping hand, if your angles are slightly off. (We recommend having a designated “anal sex pillow,” because yeah, sometimes poop makes an appearance. It's anal!) Don’t stress out if this isn’t a position you enjoy, whether you’re having it anally, vaginally, or both. This position is very easy to tweak, if need be. If having the receiver’s legs out straight is hard on their knees or hip flexors, simply bend their knees. It might not be a classic “Eagle,” but what’s most important is that you’re comfortable. Don’t be afraid to play around with it and find what works for you.
Sex positions are supposed to be fun and not every position is ideal for every person. Advocate for yourself, communicate with your partner, and go on a sexy adventure to find a sex position that you truly enjoy.

Honestly, what would we do without Google?
We thought we were pretty clued up when it came to sex positions, but clearly we're not. Everyone was left pretty confused when Love Island ' s Curtis Pritchard confessed his favourite sex position was "The Eagle" on last night's episode (June 4). The funniest Love Island memes 2019 (so far) The truth came out when the Islanders were given their first challenge of the series. Each Islander had to whizz down a slime-covered slide, correctly guess facts about the other constants, and then give a kiss to who they thought the information applied to in order to bag a point for their team.
When it came time for Amber Gill to compete, she read out: "My favourite sex position is the eagle." The girls correctly guessed that Curtis had said it and he shared a passionate kiss with Amber. Later, Curtis explained his love of The Eagle. "The Eagle is my favourite romantic position we shall say…," he teased. "I will leave you all to find that out yourself, because I am not telling you what it is."

Well, there are a few variations for The Eagle position. Basically, one person (1) has to be on their knees, while another (2) is lying on their back with their legs in the air. Person 1 then holds Person 2's legs wide apart to get the perfect angle for, erm, penetration .
We'll never look at an eagle in the same way again…
