All your questions about anal foreplay, answered.
You might have heard of rimming, also known as anilingus, but you’d be forgiven for not knowing exactly what it means. The term refers to anal foreplay with the tongue – specifically licking, penetrating, sucking, kissing, or otherwise orally stimulating your partner's anus.
People of all genders and sexual orientations have been engaging in anal play for centuries. We know this thanks to the saucy pictures depicted on Ancient Greek pottery dating back to 500BC. But is rimming safe and does it come with any health risks?
We speak to psychosexual and relationship counsellor Carolyn Cowan and GP trainee Dr Elizabeth Dapre about what a rim job is, safety tips and how to enjoy anal play responsibly:
Rimming, also known as anilingus, is part of anal pleasure. 'It is licking the anus, the anal sphincter and the perineum,' explains Cowan. 'It is often performed alongside genital touch.'
Although it's an enjoyable foreplay experience, those who engage in rimming are unlikely to climax from it alone. 'Most will not orgasm through rimming alone and it is considered as a part of sexual foreplay,' adds Cowan. 'However, it is a great way to discover if you find your, or your partner’s anus, or anal play, arousing as it does not involve penetration and so there is no risk of pain.'
As with any sexual activity, how rimming works depends very much on the couple. Cowan suggests: 'It's best to discuss with your partner if they would like to try to play in this way, first. For some, the anus is no-go area and it is important to respect this.
With a little bit of preparation and some basic hygiene, there's no reason why you can't still enjoy anilingus.
'If playing with this for the first time you could begin with oral sex and genital play and they work your way down. It can be enjoyed across the gender and gender preference spectrum, and is considered a gentle form of anal play.'
While rimming is an enjoyable experience for many, some of you may be concerned about the hygiene risks associated with putting your tongue on your partner's anus.
'In addition to the common sexually transmitted infections, such as herpes and warts, which can be passed on via any type of oral sex, venturing that little bit further to experiment with anilingus does increase your risk of contracting specific infections carried within faecal matter,' says Dr Dapre.
Rimming is one of the riskier choices of sexual play because of the potential for contracting infections.
In short: 'rimming is one of the riskier choices of sexual play because of the potential for contracting infections which can be transmitted via your poo,' explains Dr Dapre. But with a little bit of preparation and some basic hygiene, there's no reason why you can't still enjoy the activity.
As with most sexual activities, there is a risk of catching a sexually transmitted infection (STI) if you engage in anilingus with an infected partner. Dr Dapre outlines the following potential risks that comes with rimming:
Hepatitis A is a common viral infection which can cause inflammation of the liver and can make you feel very unwell.
Salmonella, shigella, E. coli and campylobacter are all bacterial infections which can cause diarrhoea , abdominal pain and fevers, and which are also transmitted via the faeco-oral route.
Parasitic infections such giardiasis are also transmitted in this way, and produce similar symptoms, often requiring treatment with antibiotics.
If you are concerned about contracting or passing on an STI, make an appointment with your local sexual health clinic to get checked out before engaging in sexual activity with a new partner.
Don't let the health risks put you off – if you want to try rimming, there are steps you can take to make the activity as safe as possible and still have a great time, as outlined by Dr Dapre:
The anus is rife with bacteria and so cleanliness and protection is key. Ensure the area is completely cleaned before engaging in sexual activity.
The safest way to engage in oro-anal play is to ensure that you and your partner are up to date with your STI checks .
Using barrier methods, such as dental dams , can significantly reduce the risks of catching or passing anything on. Dental dams, for those who are not familiar, are sheets of latex that can be used on genitals to protect against STIs and infections.
You may also wish to douche the area before rimming in order to ensure cleanliness and help you both relax. If so, ensure you use a douche or enema designed specifically for anal use.
If you intend to continue with foreplay or sex after analingus, it's extremely important to wash your mouth efficiently before putting your tongue anywhere near your partner's mouth, penis or vagina afterwards, to avoid spreading infection.
Aside from our rimming safety tips, anal play can be great fun so use your imagination and enjoy!

In 2014, people couldn't talk about anything but the sex act. Let's go back to 2014.
Anilingus, or rimming, was having such a great run in the mid-2010s. It had been thriving in the LGBT community for a while, but then straight people came along in 2015 and helped make her a star, like yaaas queen or Carly Rae Jepsen. We all loved rimming for a minute, but we haven't heard much about her lately. Is she happy? Is she working? Rimming: where is she now ?
Rimming is the act of stimulating someone’s anus with your mouth. There’s quite a concentration of nerves back there, so the stimulation via kissing or tongue use can be equally powerful. Granted, that's not to say that it's the miracle sexual act—a rim job comes with as much risk as any other sexual act. The possible transmission of HPV and multiple strains of hepatitis are coupled with the threat of bacterial issues. For more information, the CDC is always a great place to start. More than anything, cleanliness is the best move. The receiving partner should shower, clean the area (inside and out), and always be honest about your STD situation because you aren't a monster.
The short version of the Anilingus Wave can be traced back to around 2014, when Complex listed 25 times rappers had mentioned eating booty. Everyone from Gucci Mane to Nicki Minaj was eating and/or having their booties eaten. Good for them. Omarion released a bop featuring Chris Brown and Jhene Aiko, featured above, with the infamous line, "Gotta eat the booty like groceries." The video, at the time of this posting, has 646,162,973 views. The hip hop community had exalted anilingus to the mountaintop.
In early 2015, How to Get Away with Murder showed up to gently remind everyone with a subtle scene that gay men have been homed in on rimming for a while. The Anussaince continued, with publications from Gawker to Cosmopolitan offering their takes on anal stimulation and its moment in the sun.
Rimming thrived in the mainstream, with shoutouts still mostly kept to the gay community and hip hop: a strange unification that is typically only mentioned when Eminem says the f-word too many times and has to apologize. In its heyday, it happened: Marnie had anilingus performed on her in a surprising scene from Season Four of Girls . This, I believe, is when rimming’s descent began.
Soon after Allison Williams' go on GIRLS , Alternet published an article titled, " Ass is the New P*ssy: Why Anilingus Is on the Rise " giving quite the traction to the growing trend. The bubble burst soon after, with a plethora of late 2015 to early 2016 think pieces on everything that should and could be done with an anus . Like a poorly cooked Hot Pocket, rimming seemed to go from a piping hot trend to an uncelebrated cold mess.
Rimming is a real Daniel Day Lewis of sex acts—if she's not the star, she's not interested. If you search Google within the past year for pieces on rimming, you find mostly links to porn, a couple posts on gay-centered websites, and a strange link to a recap of American Horror Story that I decided not to click on. To paraphrase a John Green young adult novel, the trend of anilingus is like falling in love: it happened slowly, and then all at once. The last personal anecdote about rimming was earlier this year via NewNowNext when a man recounted getting his third gastrointestinal parasite, so be warned.
All of that is to say that while rimming may have gone out of style for your favorite online publications, anilingus is still here. She's thriving, even if she doesn't brag about it. And she's ready when you are. She has the trophies. She has the acclaim. And she doesn't need to flaunt it: she's just waiting for you.
If it's something you'd want to dabble in, take it slow. Though not the sexiest of the protective sheaths, a dental dam is a great gateway for someone who's never explored the Wild West of Anilingus. There are a series of lubes that can help with that unexplored territory as well, but most of all, move at your own pace. A combination of kissing, tongue work, and caressing can do wonders for 2015's favorite sex act.
The big point is that if you're taking that leap, be like anilingus: brave, adventurous, and perennially cool.

Remember: sex is about the journey, not the destination
Rimming, ass licking , analingus (if we want to use its Christian name), or simply a rim job, involves licking, penetrating with the tongue, sucking, kissing, or otherwise orally stimulating your partner's bum. Despite the misconceptions out there, rimming is not merely a stop on the road to anal sex – it's a fun sexual activity in its own right that can be enjoyed by people of all gender and sexual identities, if they so wish. Some people might consider it the main sex act of the day while other people might view it as a way to prepare for anal sex – it's totally up to the individual and their partner, and what they both fancy.
As with *every* sexual activity between consensual partners, trust and communication are necessary for enjoyable rimming. Thankfully, Jess Wilde, sex and bondage expert at Lovehoney , was able to share her invaluable wisdom on what a rim job is and give her advice and tips for the best ways of giving and enjoying a rimming.
A rim job is when one partner licks, kisses, sucks, and stimulates their partner's anus with their mouth and tongue. It doesn't have to always involve penetration of the tongue, but it can if you and your partner are into it! It can be a wonderful, pleasurable act on its own. But it can also be a great way to prepare for anal sex and get comfortable and ready for penetration.
Once you and your partner have decided that rimming is something you’d like to try, it’s time to prepare. For both of your benefit, it’s a good idea to have a thorough clean before you begin. This can be a bath or shower or, if you want to, you can use an anal douche before you play. It doesn’t matter how you do it, just do it.
If you want to have a really thorough clean, you can try an enema or anal douche. It’s pretty obvious why this is important to the person performing tongue play (taste, smell, bacteria, sweat), but it’s also really important for the receiver. It’s understandable that a lot of people have concerns about cleanliness in that area due to its 'day job' (plus it’s pretty tricky to get a good look at your own bumhole) so knowing that you’ve given yourself a jolly good clean will help you relax.
The more relaxed you are, the more pleasure you’re likely to get from the experience.
For some reason, a lot of people who choose to trim their pubic hair seem to forget that it grows much further than the perineum. Most people have a hairy butthole (even if it’s just a straggler or two.) Don’t believe me? Go take a look in the mirror.
Now, clearly body hair's a choice, and if you like having short and curlies around your pink balloon knot, then that’s cool. But, if your partner has a real aversion to body hair and you want to some bum-fun (and are happy to compromise) you might like to consider giving your bot-bot some grooming attention the next time you’re in the area. Not only will it help prevent the old hair-between-the-teeth scenario for your partner, but the less hair you have between your skin and theirs, the easier it’ll be for your partner to get their tongue and lips where you’ll feel it most. Less hair = better stimulation = bum-holy-bliss!
Even with a thorough clean, a lot of people still feel a little uneasy with direct tongue-to-butthole contact, and that’s OK! Any genital contact can lead to the transfer of bacteria and STI s. If you and your partner haven’t had a recent anal STI check, or one of you would just feel more comfortable with a barrier between you, pick up a dental dam . They create a physical barrier between you and whatever you're licking. The person receiving can still feel everything without direct contact. Some are even flavoured for extra delectable derriere licking.
We all know that most meals taste better with a little seasoning. Take the same approach when it comes to salad tossing and drizzle your lover’s anus with your favourite flavoured lube. It’ll have the double benefit of helping your lips and tongue slide over sensitive areas, as well as tasting delicious.
Try Lovehoney's range of flavoured, water-based lubes - we love this strawberry version .
You can always give the lube to your partner and get them to pour it wherever they want your tongue to travel...
Remember: sex is about the journey, not the destination . When it comes to rimming, I recommend roaming, rather than setting your crack-nav to “quickest route”. Don’t make a beeline for the B-hole. Explore your partner’s body as much as you can in other ways to excite their mind and awaken their skin before you get to Their Precious (yeah, that was a Lord Of The Rings reference).
Start with the furthest points and work your way in towards the bullseye. You could use a lickable massage oil or lubricant and begin massaging, squeezing, licking and kissing their bumcheeks and inner thighs.
When you’re ready to start getting closer to your aim, begin gently parting their cheeks so you can see their anus. For now, resist the temptation to touch it. You simply want to tease the area, as close as you can, with your fingers, lips and mouth, so they’re pretty much begging for it when you’re done.
A great tip to stimulate their actual anus without physical contact is to use your breath. Breathe warm air over their bottom as a final tease before you make contact. When you’ve decided they’ve had enough teasing torture, then it’s time.
Experiment with different shapes , movements, pressure and tongue shapes. Some people love a firm lick from a broad, flat tongue, while others need the delicate tickle of the tip of a tongue circling their opening. Everyone is different.
If you and your partner have discussed trying some penetration, you can delve a little deeper. Try poking your tongue into their anus just a little . Really only the first inch or so is uber-sensitive, so it isn’t a case of “t
