Upgrades can boost the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. They also boost extra bonuses such as damage from PvE and crit chance.

Components
Upgrade components are items that can be inserted into armor, weapons and trinkets to provide an additional stat boost or effect when they're used. These can be obtained by making crafts, buying from vendors, trading with other players, or looting. Certain upgrades come with special cosmetic effects.
Upgrade components are only available to devices that have slots. The item must be upgraded to a blue level before a component can be used. Upgrade components, unlike other mods, can only be applied once. They are not able to be replaced or applied several times. Infusions and Enrichments are a kind of upgrade component that can be used to upgrade non-amulet legendary and Ascended equipment, as well as some non-ascended items. Infusions and enrichments are recovered by salvaging gear that is ascended or by completing an elite mission in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

The value of each Glyph is displayed when you choose it in your inventory. You can replace it with a Glyph of the same rank or higher rank, which will increase the value of the glyph.
Glyphs can be found in the Black Lion Trading Post as part of the Gem Store bundle or purchase them with certain tools that are unlimited in use as well as during Faction Crypt Raids. Each Faction Crypt could drop one of these Glyphs. There are also some rare glyphs you can find in any of the Faction Crypts.
When you have the desired Glyphs then you need to place them on your gear. Each Glyph unlocks a unique bonus which will boost a specific set of stat nodes that are within the radius of the Glyph. It could be +40 for one of your primary stats or +25 for two of your secondary stats, based on the Glyph.
Utilizing the Glyph will boost all the nodes connected to it, and it is recommended to position your Glyphs near key nodes on the Graph to maximize the impact. Druids for instance, should place their Glyphs close to their primary damage nodes. They may also want to consider placing them near their most critical damage nodes.
Leveling
The upgrade system of items allows players to increase the stats of specific items by inserting upgraded components. This is known as "upping". Each upgradeable item is assigned a level which determines the final statistics. Upgraded items can be leveled up to a maximum level of 385. Each level of item requires various components, and the cost of upgrading increase with each level.
Some upgrades require a special ingredient to activate. This ingredient can be obtained by completing Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be found in the upgrade tab of a crafting table or obtained from NPCs. Each Upgrade Recipe that is completed will result in a certain amount of Technology points. These points can be used to leveling up an item. When enough points have been earned you will be able to claim the upgrade and receive its additional bonuses.
When an individual player upgrade the equipment they have the original item is replaced by the new item. The same armor can be transformed into the form of a weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item will also come with a bonus of its own. This can be a disadvantage because it can cause the item to become more expensive if you don't require it.
Item upgrades can sometimes be rerolled if the player has enough reroll tokens to do this. This will cause the item to be exchanged for a brand new one, with a level 1 base and a completely different set of bonuses. This can be beneficial but it should not be repeated often since it can waste resources.
Certain upgrades can boost their value, allowing players to customize their equipment. One example is Dolphin's Gift, which gives a buff when the player repeatedly enters and exits water (or does not swim as dolphins). This item can be upgraded several times by increasing the maximum roll each time by 10 increments. This item is very valuable in PvP.
