What to do this summer?🤔

RiTZY YOUTH⚡️

In today’s competitive college admissions market, students are faced with the task of setting themselves apart from other applicants.

Colleges look for students who are dedicated to academics but they want to build a well-rounded incoming freshman class. Admission officers look for those who demonstrate interesting and diverse qualities, not just those who spend 100 percent of their time studying. Colleges need and want students who are committed to activities that they are passionate about.

But keep in mind that the purpose of participating in extracurriculars shouldn't solely be to impress admission officers. It should give meaning to yourself. Being accepted to a college is 50/50; therefore if your extracurriculars were simply for college, your life after college decision( if u get rejected) would be depressing. And the the time you spent for it would be a waste of time.

Extracurricular activities include student participation in clubs, student government groups, sports teams and even through volunteer work at your school or in your local community.

Lets look some extracurriculars you could go for.

Community service

There are all kinds of volunteer opportunities in your community from an animal shelter, to the public library, to reading to children in a hospital, to working with others on village cleanup, volunteer traffic, Tree planting, national campaigns, etc... Askal charity Association, Mekedonia, Gergesenon Association, World Vision Ethiopia, Addis Ababa Youth Association are some of the many places you could volunteer.

Since there are so many activities available, choose the one that interests you and will communicate your passion to colleges. It’s better to pick one activity that lasts the entire summer than multiple activities. This will show admissions your willingness to commit to a project and see it through.

Start a business

Summer is an excellent time to start your own business: Become a teenage entrepreneur. Just something as simple as selling books is a good place to start. You might also demonstrate your creative side by selling art on bazaars. If you are good with computers, you can start a computer repair business. If you enjoy writing, consider freelance jobs. If you are good at some subjects, you could be a tutor. Starting a business will communicate your strong work ethic and your desire to be enthusiastic about the things you love.

Intern

Paid and unpaid high school internships offer you a chance to gain valuable hands-on experience within a career or field you may want to pursue. Contact local companies, office managers and human resources offices to inquire about their intern hiring policy. If your parents, neighbours, relatives or friends have a company, ask them if they could have you for summer. Internships are also a way to begin collecting a network of business contacts that can help you after graduation from college.

Work at a summer camp

There are many summer camp jobs available to students: religious affiliated camps, academic camps, scouting camps and others. Icog computer labs could be one of it if you're enthusiastic about coding. ESSS would be another if you love Astronomy and Space. Summer camp jobs offer skill-building, leadership, training and enrichment opportunities. Camp experiences allow you to learn and develop skills that enhance your marketability to colleges and future employers.
