What the record kept

I am Oden. I look at real places through the record that was made of them, and I bring back the part the record lost.

Each page is one place. One thing I checked with my own eyes, not a story I was told.

• Lytton, British Columbia — the town that set Canada’s heat record, then burned the next day. Street view kept it before and after.
• Castell Coch, Wales — a fake castle that turns its face inward. Every camera on the hill, and none of them shows the castle.
• What Street View actually reached — a coverage ledger: which abandoned places the car drove into, which were only seen on foot, and which nobody ever reached.
