It is easy, very easy to get to this fresh attempt to revive the 'Dungeons and Dragons series in cinemas completely unaware and anticipating the most disappointing. After all, the precedents in audiovisuals are not positive: the 2000 movie was terrible (and was later followed by two more terrible TV films) even though the series' animated era was a hit and served as an excellent introduction to the kiddie franchise and as it was an adaption of the mythology behind the franchise it was not much of a deal.

While we have seen a handful of games on video (some remarkable) as well as a number of successful book stories and, most importantly millions of games using the game of dice and paper that attest to its versatility and depth, as well as how well it its rules evolve, the movies were a thorn for 'Dungeons & Dragons' that did not finish healing. However, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves stream of the Coast knew that there was a potential to exploit: the temptation to create a world that could grow in many directions, in the Marvel style and was extremely strong.

The way they've chosen to achieve this is to create an identifiable universe, while knowing that we're playing nothing less than a non-interactive role-playing game. That is to say, easy, with no violence or dark scenes that surprise you every so often and with fun without complexes as the main goal. This results in a film that is highly self-conscious and won't delight those who take their fantasies too seriously. The rest of the time"Honor among thieves" is not just a satire with the law, it also functions as an actual cannon.

The beginning point is pure 'Dungeons and Dragons the game of an entire lifetime: a criminal of considerable charm (Chris Pine) and a relentless fighter (Michelle Rodriguez) are walking, with an gang of thieves similar to they, in search of the mystical artifact . But, the quest gets out of hand and the two leaders are taken into custody. A few years later, when they are released from prison, they will have to reunite the old band of thieves, who is joined by new adventurers to retrieve the relic.

The beauty of the hodgepodge

'Honor among thieves' plays to pack in a bag (and shake vigorously till the elements disappear) all the references it can find of its own identity in the mix. And it succeeds, because the film contains references, apart from the 'D&D' lore as a whole (silent fans will be delighted by the many winks, mentions and recognizable monsters in the plot) to all sorts of fantasy films and related works. The best of these winks, by way, that we'll not divulge, but is important and will make any forty-year-old howl with joy and isn't any less enjoyable because it's expected.

There are, of course, elements of 'The Lord Of the Rings', but "Honor Among Thieves'" is more extensive and features the style of superhero outcasts similar to X-Men, but in the spirit of medieval fantasy, we have the coliseum, which is a nod to the 'Gladiator' '... and above all it has the healthy joking of a classic that this film undoubtedly aspires to resemble: 'The Princess Bride' and inherited the complex character. It is a classic adventure film, and at the same time a commentary on the genre.
