The film becomes a bloody scream that delivers a frightful, shivering excitement that makes you say, "This is what I was looking for!" It gives people who love the Evil Dead films something newly and claustrophobic, with the action taking in the living room as well as the hallway and unstable lift. Yet, you don't need to be a fan of the previous films - this is watch-through-your-hands horror at its finest.
There are some wonderful little nuggets that reference the original movies - like eating an eyeball with a snore, creepy nursery rhymes, as well as using silver-colored duct tape for wrapping up wounds. However when Beth plays with real depth and a determined determination to live by Sullivan and Sullivan, cranks up the chainsaw, and says, "Come get some," her own version of Ash's "groovy" is all that can be accepted as a blessing.
After scrapping the money together and putting it to good use, the group began their own campy clever film that would eventually with a number of sequels, a musical off Broadway and a niche, but well-loved television series. For those who are serious about horror The Evil Dead might not be considered to be particularly sophisticated or artistic however, those who love body horror films would fight to defend it as good fun anyway.
I'm delighted to say the fact that Evil Dead Rise upholds the tradition of the infamous classic, while also holding its own as a stand-alone feature.
