An AZW file is a digital eBook formatted for the Amazon Kindle, a wireless reading device. It contains formatted book text and chapter markers and is similar to a Mobipocket .PRC file. AZW files can be transferred from a PC to the Kindle via a standard USB connection and can also be read using the Kindle desktop software.
Most AZW files contain DRM protection that only allows them to be viewed on the Amazon Kindle or with Amazon Kindle reading software. However, it may be possible to view unprotected Kindle eBooks on a PC with Mobipocket Reader by changing the file extension from ".azw" to ".prc."
Files with the .azw extension are most commonly associated with the Amazon Kindle digital reading device. Amazon Kindle allows users to download eBooks from the Amazon Marketplace and read them on the portable Kindle reader. The AZW files contain books that have been formatted for use with the Kindle. Users can download the eBooks directly to their Kindle via a wireless connection or they can transfer files from their PC to their Kindle using a USB connection. iPhone users can also read AZW files on their iPhones by downloading the Kindle software to their iPhone device.
