What is Sepak Takraw

Sepak Takraw is a foot volleyball game and also known as kick ball, where players touch as well as handle the ball using only their feet, knee, chest and head. Huge similar to the sport volleyball but sepak takraw is played with a woven rattan or syntethic ball. also the rules and regulations are very much similar. Sepak Takraw is a sport which is played all throughout Southeast Asia. It is called sepak raga in Malay, sipa in Filipino, cau may Iin Vietnamese, and ka-taw in Lao. It was originated in Malaysia, in 1940 the net version of the game was spread across Southeast Asia and formed rules and regulations were formed for the game. Around 1950, it was played in almost every school.

The game can be played indoors as well as outdoors. The sport is played by two teams who are called regus with three members each side where one player is located at the back and is known as tekong. The tekong serves the ball and after the ball is served; the players are then permitted to move freely. The use of hands is not approved and each player can touch the ball just once before it is hit over the net. Balls are ‘woven’, and must consist of 12 holes and 20 intersections and be with the regulation size and weight. The object of the game is for one team to score more points than their opposition by causing their opponents to commit a fault, resulting in a score being awarded. Sepak tekraw usually has three sets of 21 points per set. The side that wins two sets is declared as the winner. If a set is tied 21-21, then a tie breaker shall be played in which the first team to open up a two point lead or reaches 25 points is the winner.

Sepak Takraw is a fast and athletic nature sports, it takes a good degree of physical fitness, flexibility as well as teamwork for a team to be successful in winning a match. It combines the foot skills of soccer with the net play of volleyball. A highly skilled game which requires a specific technique each in handling the ball where players routinely spike the ball with turning acrobatic somersault movements or bicycle kicks in mid air to keep the ball in play. Players have their own skills and acrobatic moves. It is played with display with extra ordinary grace with every movement generating hot stomping moments.
