What happens if I send my Bitcoin to an incorrect address?
In most of the cases, they are lost for good.
It depends what we mean by “incorrect though:
- If incorrect means malformed with some wrong characters, it is almost impossible that you wallet allows you to form the transaction because there's a checksum in every correct address and the wallet checks it before, so you are safe in this case (Ethereum addresses haven't got this security check).
- The address is well formed but it is not the one you wanted to send the funds to. In that case, it depends on to whom the private keys of that address belong to. If it is a friend of yours or a friendly merchant, maybe you have a good chance to get your money back.
- The address is well formed but it was created without deriving it from a known private key. This is one of the cases in which your money are lost for ever and we say: “Sorry for you lost and thank you for the deflation”.
- The address was injected by a malaware in substitution of the one you wanted to send the bitcoins to, with the purpose of stealing you the money. Also in this case you loose your funds but they are not lost in general ( the hacker get them). Check the destination address well in every occasion it is possible for you to do it and take any precaution about the software you are using.
