If you are keen about the insurance industry and want to work as an insurance agent, you first need to know the types of insurance agent. The insurance industry has two types of agents- independent and captive agents. Captive insurance agents usually enjoy a stable job with added commissions as they work for a single carrier only.  

In this article, I will be narrowing it down to how to become a captive agent in the insurance industry.  

Do you have any certificates or degrees that are related to the field of insurance?  

Insurance companies expect candidates to meet a long list of requirements, and having a relevant degree is always a plus point. Having a credential in the business-related field makes you more sell-able to the insurance companies. If you have a business degree, you can have more options in positions to choose from in an insurance company.  

The next step is to select an insurance carrier. It would help if you researched about the companies that you want to represent. You should choose the company that best suits your profile and beliefs.  

The third step for becoming a captive agent is to figure out what type of insurance you want to sell. You should go back to why you wanted to join the insurance industry and work towards it. Figure out your interests and select the type that best suits you.  

The last step in becoming a captive agent is to obtain your insurance license. Working as a captive agent means a lot of benefits that the insurance carrier will provide such as the training for the test. After you have given your exam, the insurance carrier will forward all the personal details, paperwork, and the exam results to the state. It will take up to several weeks for your license to be issued.
