What are Things that Taste Like?
Alex: You've also been working on a free Marketplace map of Summer's base.
Max Brooks: Yeah! The mountain is visible in the map after Guy and Summer have left. In reality, it was a major issue. I was about two-thirds through writing The Mountain when I finally got my feet down and began playing the game. The Nether was shifting from top to bottom. Instead of getting mad I realized that this was the most important lesson I have learned in my life. You have to change with the world as it changes.
Alex Alex: Much like The Island, the book is extremely precise.
Max Brooks: Research is essential to me in everything I do. Because I spend a lot of time researching I don't have enough time to write as many books. With something like Minecraft I live with the fear of people saying, "That would never happen!" So I played hundreds of hours of Minecraft and made sure that the game's mechanics are reflected in the book. Additionally, there are some things that just happen in Minecraft that you could never think of on your own. My character from The Island shoots his last shot at a creeper, and then hits a bat that occurs by. This actually happened while I was playing Minecraft!
Alex: The authenticity of these books is what makes them so enjoyable.
Max Brooks: Yes, I do. Also, I'd like to build trust and rapport with my readers through each book I write. They should be able to trust me to take them on a trip through a place that I am familiar with, and that I serve as their tour guide.

Max Brooks: Sarah Peed my editor is truly a blessing. She encouraged me to write my first book and asked me what the Island felt like. What is it like to taste? How does the breeze feel on your face? What do you feel the grass feels like under your feet? I wanted the book to be a calming experience, so I thought netherrack must smell sulfurous. I wanted people to feel like they were there.
