What about security in Southern Europe?

While Europe holds strong against direct and openly aggressive enemies in the east, and therefore our attention is captured towards the swathes of Eurasia, we must not forget the threats we have been long facing in the southern sector: the Mediterranean basin, the natural barrier that divides our civilization from barbarism.

Turkish maneuvers

As Russia’s influence over the Middle East and North Africa seems to be waning lately, it appears clearly that Turkey, according Erdogan’s neo-Ottoman ambitions, has stepped up to replace the decaying Kremlin’s sway, and in the most effective way: the Russian-backed Assad’s regime’s debacle made way for the Turkish-aligned Islamist new regime; Libya may be looking, under Istanbul’s authority, towards a reconciliation between the enemy entities of Tripolitania, a Turkish puppet, and Cyrenaica, since the Haftars may be ditching Moscow.

The Turks are striving to accomplish their dream of the Mavi Vatan – “Blue Fatherland” –, a project that will place a huge area under the Turkish grip, from the Black Sea to the Central Mediterranean: having ousted the Russians from the Caucasus, along with the Azeri allies that neutralized Armenia, watching pleased as Israel and Iran mess with each other, with the strategic foothold in Northern Cyprus and the Kurdish uprising officially over, if Turkey is allowed to extend their grasp right in front of the Italian shores, Europe will see the undisturbed rise of a new major power. The consequences of it won’t surely just be about power projection or our oil and gas interests, it will be about security and survival.

The immigration catastrophe

Erdogan’s maneuvers should not make us forget the oldest and most severe issue Southern European countries have been dealing with since the turn of the century, that of immigration. Spain struggles to keep order in the exclaves of Ceuta and Melilla, Italy’s accords with the unreliable Tripoli government are disregarded by the latter, Greece and the EU are blackmailed by Turkey, that hosts millions of Middle Easterners ready to flood the Balkans across the Aegean when the money flow stops.

In the meantime, bad actors operate in the depths of Black Africa. The Russian Africa Corps, the PMC once known as the infamous “Wagner Group”, influences the Russian-aligned African countries to weaponize migration up north towards Europe.

The existential menace of immigration and its demographic consequences are scientifically used by Europe’s enemies, who exploit our structural ideological weaknesses to undermine the very foundations which European civilization was built upon: the exceptionality of our kin. Crushing immigration and its sponsors not only means ensuring our security and survival but restoring our greatness as well.
