What Your IP Address Reveals About You — And How to Check
DevToolKitEvery time you visit a website, your IP address tells them more than you think. Here is what is exposed and how to check.
What Your IP Reveals
Your public IP address is like your digital home address. From it, anyone can determine:
- Your approximate city and region
- Your Internet Service Provider (ISP)
- Whether you are on a VPN or proxy
- Your network type (residential, business, datacenter)
- Sometimes even your building or neighborhood
IPv4 vs IPv6
Most people are still on IPv4 (like 192.168.1.1). IPv6 addresses are longer and often more traceable because they can be tied to a specific device rather than a shared NAT.
How to Check Your IP
From the command line:
curl -s ifconfig.me curl -s icanhazip.com dig +short myip.opendns.com @resolver1.opendns.com
Or use a web tool that shows everything at once — your IP, location, ISP, browser info, and a privacy exposure score:
→ Check Your IP Address (free, no tracking)
Protecting Your IP
- Use a VPN to mask your real IP
- Tor Browser for maximum anonymity
- Check for WebRTC leaks (can expose your real IP even behind a VPN)
- Use DNS-over-HTTPS to prevent ISP snooping
Beyond Your IP: Browser Fingerprinting
Your IP is just the beginning. Websites can also identify you through browser fingerprinting — your screen resolution, installed fonts, GPU model, and more create a unique signature.
