What You Need to Know About Salmonella Contamination from Beef

Another 5 million pounds of raw beef products pulled from JBS Tolleson Inc. This brings total withdrawal from the company to 12 million pounds of raw beef that may be contaminated with Salmonella.

The company is recalling packaged raw beef products from July 26, 2018, until September 7, 2018. Contaminated beef has the date of establishment of EST 267 under the USDA inspection mark. Products are sent to national retail locations, according to the company.

This withdrawal has been carried out in collaboration with the US Department of Agriculture (FSIS) Food Safety and Inspection Service. The FSIS said it was concerned that some of the raw beef that was withdrawn might be in a consumer freezer. This urges consumers to dispose of the affected raw meat or return it to the place of purchase. FSIS said that consumers should not cook or consume pulled beef products.

This is an expanded withdrawal from contaminated raw beef products from JBS. The FSIS and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, together with state public health and agriculture agencies, have identified 246 people from 25 states affected by the Salmonella outbreak.

Salmonella is a bacterial disease that can cause symptoms of diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours. Diseases usually last for four to five days with some cases resulting in hospitalization. Older adults, babies, and people with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to disease. Contact your health care provider if you show these symptoms.

Consumers with questions about withdrawals can contact the JBS USA Consumer Hotline at 1-800-727-2333.

Food safety questions can be directed to Tanya Karen - FSIS virtual representatives are available 24 hours a day on AskKaren.gov or with a smartphone at m.askkaren.gov. The USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline can be contacted at 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854) from 10am to 6pm. (EST), Monday to Friday. Registered food safety messages are available 24 hours a day, and the online Consumer Electronic Complaints Monitoring System can be accessed at fsis.usda.gov/reportproblem.

JBS also drew nearly 100,000 pounds of beef for possible E. coli contamination in November, according to USA Today. The 2000 pound pallet is packed in plastic packages labeled as Blue Ribbon Beef with eight to 10 pounds, according to news outlets.
