What Surfing Gives and Takes

The honest accounting of what surfing produces for its practitioners

The Benefits

The benefits that surfing produces for the people who practise it: the physical fitness that the paddling and the balance training provides; the mental health benefit that the specific outdoor, physical, ocean-focused activity produces; and the specific community that the lineup provides.

The Costs

The costs: the specific injury risk that surfing produces, particularly for the surfers who push their limits in the conditions whose power exceeds their experience; and the specific time commitment that the surf-planning lifestyle produces.

Surf LA Coverage

Surfing LA covers the honest accounting of surfing because the accountability journalism of the surf culture requires examining what the practice produces in honest terms alongside the celebration of what it enables.
