Lolita's Care
For decades, activists have been pleading for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the returning of orca Keiko into the wild, those who fought for her were hopeful that Lolita would suffer a similar fate. However, she was never given the chance to return to the ocean.
Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinary doctor and continue to put her in danger. They sabotage her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her by putting her through head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. They also put her in a tank one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as to be a family member in a plan to eventually move her to the open water. The plan would have included a facility on Washington's west coast where she could live for the duration of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the ocean not an empty concrete tank.
If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild, killers whales are social animals and are close to their family members until death. Lolita who has been in a solitary space at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. People from all over the country have called for Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and then release into the wild.
