What is Evolution?

The word "evolution" originates from the Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has evolved in both science and in other fields. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to change into a new species. The term"transmutation" was coined by the Lamarck's disciple, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, to describe this view. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, challenged the idea of evolution, and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.
Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process by which living creatures develop traits to improve their chances of surviving or conceiving offspring. In time the genetic variability could lead to the emergence of entirely new physical or biological traits in the same population. This shift in gene frequency is called natural selection, and is the primary driver behind evolutionary change. However non-genetic changes like the increase in muscle mass due to diet or exercise cannot be considered examples of evolution since they are not passed on to future generations.
Creationists make the argument that evolution is controversial despite the fact that it has been proven valid by a multitude of scientific tests and it has stood the test of time. The most well-known kind of creationist is called the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in the exact way described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the creation's six days is true and that the universe and the life on Earth started only recently.
OECs aren't as popular However, their beliefs are as fierce like the YECs. OECs believe that the universe and life on Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is an untruth.
Both forms of creationism reject the notion that scientific principles such as natural selection and abiogenesis could explain the origins of life on Earth. They argue that evolution is impossible, because it would require miracles. The founders of modern scientific thought shunned miracles because they feared they would lose their credibility.
Some creationists accept naturalistic evolutionary as well as special creation and call their view “theistic evolution.” This is sometimes also called "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the original species." The theory suggests that God creates the original species and allows them to change over time. Eventually these evolutionary changes will result in new species like the original ones.
Other creationists hold that God created the universe and all living things during a single event, known as the Great Flood. They believe that all species were created at the same moment and that they gradually evolved. They also deny the notion of abiogenesis and claim that the self-replicating creation of organisms from nonliving matter is impossible.
In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education are in support of this view as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. Some scientists and educational institutions are however more flexible and allow both creationism and evolution to be incorporated into their curricula.
What is Creationism?
When people think of the concept of creationism typically think of the United States. However, South Korea is also the home of an anti-evolutionist movement. Publishers of high school textbooks have recently declared that they will be removing references to evolution from their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this drive. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of the avian, called the Archeopteryx. The next step is to eliminate excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch-research and also on human evolution.
STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families and individual members. The goal, according to STR is to clear the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which portrays an image of students as being negative. It also seeks to counter the influence of American creationists who live in the US. A survey of trainee biology teachers found that about half do not believe in the concept of evolution. The root causes are unclear but could be due to religious beliefs and the lack of full-time creation scientists across the country.
The KACR has accomplished a lot in the past through seminars and lectures.
