What Is Door Handle Replacement And Why Is Everyone Talking About It?
Door Handle Replacement
It's worth replacing door handles if you aren't happy with the way they appear, or if they are difficult to use. With some patience, you can put in the new handle in no time.
Modern door handles are typically equipped with cover plates that conceal the screws for an attractive look. However, you'll have to attach them separately if the new handle doesn't have them attached already.
Remove the old handle
Door handles aren't just an an important aesthetic addition to your home but they're also vital for safety since they let you lock and unlock your door. Over time, the door handle may start to lose its grip or feel a bit loose. It might be beginning to appear worn out and old. This is a good indication that it's time to replace your door handle.
If your door handle is becoming difficult to use, it could be time to replace it. This is a problem because it means that you can no longer lock or unlock your door, which could create a security risk for you and your family.
Another reason to replace your door handle is when it's damaged or broken. A broken door handle can be very dangerous, especially when your children or elderly family members are unable to open it, and get trapped within. Fortunately, it's fairly easy to fix a broken door handle by simply replacing the old one.
Modern door handles are usually standard sizes and should fit any door. If you're unsure if your new door handle will fit, try removing the old one and determining the holes in its housing. This will let you buy the right size door handle.
The most straightforward method to remove the door handle you have been using is to unscrew it from the door. This is typically done with a screw driver. Some door handles have a cover plate which hides the screws used to mount them. It is necessary to remove the cover plate to gain access to the screws. After you have removed the handle that was previously used, take note of the way in which the spindle is attached. This will help you align the new handle.
You can also remove the door handle by removing the latch mechanism. upvc door handles is usually done using a screwdriver but you'll need to locate the small latch, which is located at the edge of the trim piece. After you have removed the latch, take off the handle and the strike plate. Then remove the latch from the door's edge.
Remove the Strike Plate
You'll need to replace your latch plate after replacing the handle. This is the plate that is the one that holds the hole in which the latch of the door hooks when the door closes. The box that the new handles are packaged in will have two different latch plates: one that is rectangular and the other circular (see the above diagram that outlines the components of a door handle). If you have a rectangular latch plate, swap it with a round one. This will let the latch hook onto the strike plate and make the handle easier.
The first step is to unhook the screw holding the latch plate. The screws are often quite tight and require a fair amount of force to loosen them. If you are able, it could be helpful to have another person help with this process.

The latch plate should come out of the door once the screws have been removed. If it is stuck or doesn't move using a nail file to scrape around the edges of the latch plate. This will sometimes free the plate up.
Now, you can proceed to making the new door strike plate to be installed. Screw the latch plate into the doorjamb using the wood screws that were included with the new handles. Do not overtighten your screws as this can damage the strike plate.
If you're not sure if the latch plate is in the proper position Try closing and opening the door to determine if it closes and latches correctly. If it does not, you will need to adjust the strikeplate either up or down, forward or back until the door locks correctly.
If the door is still moving or jiggling, then you may need to increase the size of the hole for the latch in the strike plate. This is more frequent in older doors, however it could be due to wear and tear, hinge mortises that are not deep enough or are not sized correctly for the latch, or due to damage or a broken strike plate that is damaged or broken. If this is the situation, follow the same procedure to adjust the strike plate, but with an iron file instead of an hammer and chisel.
Take off the Latch
The latch is an angled metal piece which slides in and out of a hole in the inside of your door. The latch is moved forward when you turn the handle. It also connects to an opening in the frame of the door to keep your door shut. If your door wiggles when you close it, changing the latch could be the only thing needed to correct the issue.
The screws that hold the door latch are difficult to see however, you can insert a screwdriver into a small hole in the trim plate, and then pull the latch off. After removal of the trim plate you will be able to pull off the latch, as well as the bolts that hold it and the spindle that holds it.
If the latch cannot be easily removed then use a paperclip tool to take it off the handle mechanism. Place the item into the recessed slot of the latch and gently twist it or jiggle until the that the latch and handle are beginning to split. You may need to repeat this several times before the latch becomes loose enough to pull out.
After the old latch has been removed, you should be able to insert the new latch into the slot with no issues. Use your new screws to attach the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it's properly positioned in the slot, and aligned with the screw chambers.
Check the backset of the current handle (the distance between the centre of the large hole on the front of the door and the edge) prior to installing the new handle. Check that the latch size of the new handle is equal to the measurement.
If you're replacing the handle or latch or handle, or if your previous lock cylinder is damaged then you'll require a new one. If you're not changing locks, however, a new latch will fit into your existing recess, and be compatible with the keys you have currently. Be sure to select an entry point with a rectangular cover plate that match your handles.

Not all doors have this gap. If yours doesn't, you will need to drill a hole into the door. The procedure to do this is similar to the procedure for opening a door with the lock, however you'll be taking extra care to avoid damaging the frame or door.
Installing new door knob screws is necessary after holes have been drilled. Be sure to purchase the same size as the previous ones, so you won't have a handle that's too tight or too loose.
