Popular porn site beeg.com was recently hacked, compromising several of the site's users.
There are a lot of risks in browsing pornographic sites, and we're not just talking about potentially embarrassing web history. Porn sites, like all other webpages, are targeted by hackers and infiltrated with malware. Malwarebytes (Opens in a new window) reported that the latest one to get hit this month was Beeg.com.
Caution: Exploitive Material Ahead On March 18th, Malwarebytes detected Beeg.com serving a drive-by download that originated from iframe injections. The domain inside this iframe leads to a redirect to an exploit kit landing page that prepares various exploits to be launched on users. Malwarebytes reported that it served Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight exploits.
After victims are compromised, a Trojan is released onto their device. Zbot Trojan was the malware detected by Malwarebytes in its study, but the report admitted malware packages could vary by country.
In response to the Beeg.com's malware attack, Google initially blacklisted the porn site but then removed the warning while malware on the site was still active. Beeg.com has since claimed its servers are clean and the site displays a disclaimer about the hack when you visit it.
You probably believe porn sites are obvious hosts of malware . While you might think this latest hack at Beeg.com proves you right, cyber crooks aren't really interested in the content of porn websites.
Being Popular Matters Hackers target sites that draw in a lot of traffic, so virtually any website on the Internet that draws viewers are at risk for malware attack. Case in point: ranking service Alexa lists Beeg.com as one of the top pornographic domains with a ranking of 332.
Keep in mind that hackers know most of their attacks will be put down by anti-malware software and careful users. They'll be persistent in attacking more than a few million times in hopes that a few will be successful. While you can't stop these sneaky hackers from launching malware campaigns, you can do a lot to not be one of the unlucky victims.
Use a browser that has built-in defenses and utilize the built-in security features your computer offers. You should install antivirus software on your devices; one we'd recommend is our Editors' Choice Bitdefender Antivirus Plus (2014) . Try disabling Java in your browsers; chances are good that you don't need it. It's better to do something than nothing.
