What Is Asmr Porn

It turns out ladies with long fingernails unboxing and playing with new iPhones is my sexual preference — something I learned after stumbling across this video and having my first ASMP experience. It’s not porn, per se, but videos like this one — particularly those involving tapping and swishing sounds — gives me a sense of low-grade euphoria. I get chills from the top of my head, down my spine and right through my genitals.
As a sex researcher, this discovery led me to an obvious question: Does ASMR make people horny? Like, I know it makes me horny, but is this an experience other people are also enjoying in this way? The recent rise of actual ASMR porn — a once niche genre that is beginning to enter the mainstream porn world with projects like Erika Lust’s new production, ASMR: The Sound of Sex — suggests the answer is yes.
But, again, as a sex researcher, I wasn’t content with that knowledge alone. If ASMR does, in fact, make people horny, that leads us to yet another question: why? So I took a deep dive into ASMR and its connection to our sexual response cycle, because yes, there is one.
First of all, you might be wondering the hell ASMR even is. This is not unusual, as even the non-erotic stuff has only recently made it into the mainstream. However, you’ve likely had plenty of experiences with ASMR without even realizing it. ASMR stands for “autonomous sensory meridian response.” This may sound fancy, but it’s essentially a sensation of spine tingling and euphoria that people experience when exposed to certain sounds, visuals or physical touch.
In most cases, ASMR is linked to an audio-visual trigger, like my video of choice where hot women open and tap their long, luxurious nails on freshly minted iPhones.
Basically, you hear certain soft sounds, (opening packages, whispering, eating certain foods slowly) feel certain types of touch, (a feather run over your skin, light massage) or see certain things (such as shibari rope tying or someone completing a puzzle) and this makes the brain happy, leading to that spine-tingling bliss down your whole body.
That said, ASMR isn’t for everyone; it can be divisive. People are generally super into it or super not into it. “Some people do not even want to interact with ASMR, as they find it off-putting,” says Mia Sabat , a sex therapist at Emjoy, a sexual wellness audio app for women. “Those who do find ASMR appealing, however, often note that they experience a state of mental relaxation, and tingling in the scalp and neck which can sometimes spread throughout their body.”
A 2018 study found ASMR “caused the participants’ heart rate to decrease and skin conductance levels to increase, an indicator of the relaxing effect of this brain-tingling sensation. Some researchers have also likened it to a head orgasm,” says Sandra Larson , RN, a nurse, relationship expert and the co-founder of My Sex Toy Guide , a hub for sexual health and wellness content.
It doesn’t take much digging to find hundreds of ASMR YouTube videos. It’s a massive community that even has its own celebrities, like ASMR star Heather Feather , who has over 530,000 followers. Interest in ASMR has exploded in recent years — just look at this chart .
While there isn’t a particularly large body of existing research on the connection between ASMR and sex, experts agree that for those who enjoy it and find it relaxing, it certainly has the potential to create an environment that is conducive for arousal. “What’s more, the relaxation and stimulation can lead to more intimacy and pleasure during sex,” Larson says.
According to The Origin Theory of ASMR , the brain and body release the same feel-good chemicals during ASMR stimulation as those released during sexual arousal: serotonin, oxytocin and dopamine. Hence, all the euphoria ASMR enthusiasts often report.
“ASMR can function similarly to a mindfulness exercise, by bringing the listener’s attention to the present through sound,” says Sarah Melancon , Ph.D, a sociologist, clinical sexologist and resident expert at The Sex Toy Co l lective . It “heightens sensitivity to sounds that we typically ignore [or] tune out on a daily basis. For those who enjoy ASMR, this sensory sensitivity may spread to other senses, which may make touch or sensations inside the body more vivid, contributing to a feeling of sexual arousal.”
The way ASMR affects people can vary wildly. Some may find it off-putting, some may feel neutral, others may find it soothing, and some may feel, well, horny. Human sexuality is interesting like that; people are into different things for different reasons. “Why do some people eroticize certain senses while others don’t?” asks Carol Queen, PhD, the staff sexologist at Good Vibrations . “I don’t think we have a solid answer to that question, but it does underlie the fact that our sexualities are, in the fine points, unique to us.”
The first step in figuring out if ASMR is a turn-on for you, personally, is to simply give it a try. Check out some videos on YouTube. Again, there are about a billion to choose from.
You’ll likely know pretty quickly whether or not this is for you. If you get an “ick” reaction and can’t stand it, you’re probably not an ASMR person — and that’s perfectly fine. You just learned something new about yourself, congrats.
But for those who do find ASMR strikes their fancy and want to explore its sexual potential, here are a few tips for incorporating ASMR into you sex life.
These are ASMR videos that are designed for sex, specifically. “Many people that experience arousal with ASMR often say that videos where people are whispering are their favorite,” Sabat says. “This could be because we often whisper when we have something very intimate to say. For many, whispering is probably the first sexual ASMR connection that their brains make.”
Have you ever had someone tickle or rub your arms, scratch your head, or massage you in a way that felt so good it was almost orgasmic? This is an ASMR response. In the bedroom, try using a feather tickler and run it over your partner’s body. Get some lovely smelling organic massage oils and engage in loving, erotic massage .
Re-create your favorite ASMR videos with your own voice. Speak softly. Try whispering in your partner’s ear (maybe while you’re massaging them). Moan gently. There’s no end to what you can try.

If you have trouble falling asleep, you'll try pretty much anything to get some shuteye, from sleeping in cool temperatures to meditation to breathing exercises. But a new sensory sleep experience method called ASMR is rapidly gaining attention for its purported beneficial sleep effects.
If you spend a lot of time on the internet, you've probably seen ASMR videos on Youtube or Reddit , or come across an ASMR playlist on Spotify . But is it a legit method to help you fall (and stay) asleep? We asked sleep experts to find out.
ASMR stands for autonomous sensory meridian response . It's often described as the sensory phenomenon of “'tingling' sensations often on the scalp, neck, and sometimes spreading to the back and limbs, with feelings of positive emotion (almost euphoric) and relaxation," says Mary Ellen Wells, Ph.D., director and assistant professor at the Neurodiagnostics and Sleep Science University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
The term ASMR was coined in 2010 by the founder of a Facebook group that documented the sensation. But it's also been referred to as "brain tingles" or a "brain orgasm." ASMR YouTube videos have been referred to as "whisper videos" or "whisper porn." (Note: despite such sexually charged terminology, there is nothing inherently sexual about ASMR, though there is a growing niche of erotic ASMR videos .)
ASMR is typically triggered by some sort of sensory stimulation (visual, auditory, touch), otherwise known as a "trigger."
Some examples of well-known triggers include:
Visual: watching someone focus on a task, such as folding laundry or assembling a model.
Auditory – whispering, brushing sounds, tapping, paper crinkling, etc. Soft and soothing voices can also trigger the sensation, which is why YouTube videos of the late painter Bob Ross are so popular in the ASMR community, says Wells.
Touch – getting hair brushed, gentle touching of hands, manicures, etc.
Put simply, science actually hasn't fully figured ASMR out. The phenomenon is simply too new and there's not enough research to support its existence, let alone its benefits.
But researchers have a few theories. One 2014 study from Swansea University found that ASMR may be related to synesthesia , a phenomenon in which people's experience of one sense is linked to their experience of another sense (for instance, the ability to hear colors, or see certain smells). Some people believe that synesthesia is caused by "cross-wiring" in the brain , or the intersection of one sensory system with another.
Others speculate that ASMR may be similar to frisson , the technical term for when you get "chills" or shivers down your spine from, say, listening to a piece of emotionally affecting music. And yet another theory asserts that ASMR may result from the same physiological mechanism that produces seizures .
Either way, based on anecdotal experience alone, it's clear that some people are capable of experiencing ASMR, while others simply do not. "I think the experience, for those able to experience it, is immediate," says W. Christopher Winter, MD, sleep researcher and author of The Sleep Solution . "I infer from [anecdotal evidence] it can have an immediate impact and probably gets better for most over time."
Because we don't even know how ASMR works yet, we can't say for sure whether it can be used for therapeutic purposes. But there are many within the community who believe that "ASMR's primary benefits may be to minimize chronic pain, improve feelings of depression/anxiety, and as a relaxation tool for sleep," says Winter.
One study from earlier this year found that watching ASMR videos reduced subjects' heart rate and increased skin conductance levels, indicating that there may be some physiological basis for ASMR inducing feelings of rest and relaxation.
Even if you don't experience the tell-tale "tingles," it's possible that watching ASMR videos or listening to an ASMR playlist could help you fall asleep, says Wells. "In sleep, it’s important to be able to relax before bed and put all of your worries and 'to-do' lists aside. I often tell people to do something boring and monotonous if they find their mind racing before bed. Some of the techniques described for ASMR are just that –boring and monotonous," she says.
That said, due to the lack of research surrounding ASMR itself, "how long it takes to develop into something that facilitates sleep, anxiety improvement, etc. is unclear," says Winter. Plus, many people watch ASMR videos on their phones, and many studies have indicated that bringing your phone into bed with you is linked to lower-quality sleep.
It's something of a matter of trial and error, as the ASMR triggers that work for you may not work for another person. "Stimuli that produce ASMR are perceptual, in other words, specific to each person," says Wells.
Based on one 2017 study of ASMR triggers, the best way to find out if ASMR works for you is to find a 1-5 minute-long video with at least two sensory triggers (e.g., a video of someone whispering and rubbing their hands on carpet at the same time, says Winter.) "The video needs to make the watcher feel like they are there...very close to the subject, immersed in the experience," he adds.
ASMR may work for you, and it might not. But finding that relaxing routine before bed is key.
"Your ASMR may or may not be triggered, but doing something relaxing and de-stressing before bed is certainly a plus for sleep," says Wells. It's all about finding your ultimate chill.

Although people often casually refer to ASMR content as " whisper porn ," and call the tingling, relaxing sensations of ASMR itself a " headgasm ," most mainstream ASMR creators, consumers, and researchers frequently and stringently insist it’s not a sex thing. No way. Not in the least.
The soft sounds, repetitive motions, personal attention, and other hallmarks of ASMR content aren’t about getting people hot and bothered, Craig Richard , a biopharmaceutical sciences professor at Shenandoah University and one of the leading authorities on the science of ASMR, tells Mashable. They’re about making people feel safe and special. And the sensation itself is not expressly erotic.
Yet despite these ubiquitous explanations and protestations, in recent years the adult industry has gone all in on "ASMR porn," which generally puts tight focus on sounds of licking, sucking, stroking, and the like, often paired with explicit yet slow and sensual visuals. In 2019, a trade magazine reported on an apparent flood of explicit ASMR content flowing out of both indie outfits and big studios — like Brazzers , which hosted a live erotic ASMR show featuring prominent performers like Abella Danger and Lisa Ann in Brooklyn that year. In 2020, an edition of GQ profiled the adult performer and director Nica Noella and her run of erotic ASMR content, and detailed the spike in demand for this sort of porn in the process. In 2021, the sex writer Gigi Engle, in an article about a new ASMR porn project created by the prominent indie producer Erika Lust , declared that that the "once niche genre [was] beginning to enter the mainstream porn world."
