A webcam model or cam model, also known as a camgirl for females and camboy for males, is a video performer who is streamed upon the Internet with a live webcam broadcast.
A webcam model often performs erotic acts online, such as stripping, in exchange for money, goods, or attention. They may also sell videos of their performances. Since many webcam models operate from their homes, they are free to choose the amount of sexual content for their broadcasts. While most display nudity and sexually provocative behavior, some choose to remain mostly clothed and merely talk about various topics while still soliciting payment as tips from their fans.
As a camgirl what are the top three activities I can do, to become more successful?
My friend and I want to do sex work on cam. How much money can we expect to make?
How much do "camgirls" typically make annually?
What are entertaining things a Camgirl can do to get more people watching?
How much do "camgirls" typically make annually?
I'm afraid you will never be able to establish "typical" yearly revenues for camgirls because their job is too flexible by essence: camgirls can work from a couple of hours per week up to 10 hours+ most days of the week, and camming itself generally represents only one part of their revenue streams.
They also often sell recorded videos, "customs" which are recorded videos made according to a specific customer request, memberships to their personal site, access to their social media accounts such as Kik or Snapchat, possibly panties. They also receive gifts from their regular customers and so on.
Hence, in order to understand camgirls earnings better, you need to stop considering them as "simply camgirls" altogether and think of them as the empowered web entrepreneurs they are.
Besides the different kind of revenue sources, there are also very different conditions in which the job of camgirl is being exerted - which can unfortunately dramatically impact their earnings. In particular there are the so called "studios" who run camgirl houses and may take for themselves a very substantial part of the income (more about it in the detailed answer below).
In a nutshell camgirls earnings range from $0 (it happens to quite a few people who get started thinking it's gonna be "easy money", whereas getting exposure on camsites is actually a ruthless competition) to monthly reported incomes of $70 K+. The distribution of these earnings is not a gaussian, and does not follow the usual 80/20 Pareto rule either.
Therefore it's pretty much impossible to get a "typical number".
However, let's try to provide you with quite a few insights about the wide spectrum of earnings in the camgirl population - and ways to get more data points if you wish (camgirls themselves are not too kind on sharing their income for privacy reasons, and to avoid making customers think they're paying 'too much').
DISCLAIMER: I worked for over 4 years in the adult industry, in particular for a rather big European cam site & I'm currently founding IndieBill (go.getindiebill.com
- SFW) which is a high revenue share - 85% - selling solution for camgirls & adult entrepreneurs in general. It’s been running for over a year so there's a business interest in my answer.
The answer is mostly focused on publicly available information though to respect everyone's private data; and I have no personal business interest in the other adult products listed below.
The answer is structured as follow, it's not exactly brief but it's thorough. The word "generally" is used a lot because data is very hard to come by in adult industry, hence one should be cautious, and nothing is white or black - it's more like 50 shades of grey :)
Most of the time camsites represents the bulk of the income of camgirls, and it's also generally the "entry point" from which most other revenue sources come from: smart camgirls develop their own audience thanks to them and capitalize onto it down the road.
We've been interviewing very successful camgirls for our market research (in the $10 - $15 K reported monthly income, and they often reported that camsites now "only" represent about a third of their income). Camming being a live performance by nature, you can only do so much of it and need to scale onto other revenue sources to build up a great income.
There's two main business models in camsites, and each of them features very different distribution of success among models - and hence of earnings - :
1- "Token sites" as they are called in the industry:
Camgirls earn the most of their money through tips in public show - meaning anyone can watch for free, but if nobody pays the show does not go forward. The 3 main ones are Myfreecams, Chaturbate and Cam4. Tokens are worth $0,05 to the camgirl generally and are purchased by customers between ~$0,08 & ~$0,17. On average those sites have a 50 - 60% revenue share in favor of the camgirl.
Camgirls having the most spectacular earnings belong to those sites because there is virtually no limit to the audience a camgirl can develop: some chatrooms have over 5000 simultaneous viewers at once.
Only a few percent of viewers do tip - but that do leave potential for extraordinary earnings, given that the camgirl is talented at "milking" the audience if I may say:
Camgirls actually have a lot of stratagems for this, especially the ones who earn very well - they got the chatroom mechanics figured out.
Myfreecams is known for being the site which has the biggest earning potential, there's about 1000 girls connected anytime of the day and the top 20 monthly reported earn between $30 000 & $70 000 per month in tips. Chaturbate is the "rising star", but I'm not too sure how much best models do there.
Please note that it is possible to establish very precise numbers for token sites since tips are mostly displayed publicly (see point 4).
This business model also has a very positive effect on camgirls income: those sites are rather "open networks", meaning camgirls can share with customers ways of being contacted outside of the site (for example their Twitter account) which in turn makes much easier the growing of a personal fanbase and development of other incomes.
Those sites don't have to care about being β€œopen networks” so much: it makes them much "cooler" compared to pay per minute websites, and Skype cannot replace them due to the crowdfunding mechanics.
This is the historic business model of camming, camgirls earn money for each minute spent by customers in paid show status - and generally are in "Freechat" status the rest of the time trying to convert visitors into a paid show.
Customers generally pay between $1 and $5 per minute for a paid show (although it can go as high as $15 / minute) and the model earns 30 to 60% of this amount - 35% being a fair average -.
Pay-per-minute sites claim revenue shares in favor of the model as high as 80%, but it's generally quite impossible to reach because you have to stack up crazy amounts of "credits" (the virtual currency) within 2 weeks time; and even then it only applies to the credits earned above the threshold until the count is reset at the end of the 2 weeks.
Top earners on those kind of sites reportedly earn up to $30 000 per month on the biggest sites, more in the $15 000 mark for "medium" sized sites.
It is though easier to make a medium income on pay-per-minute sites because a camgirl can only have a couple customers at once - when a camgirl is currently booked, other customers have to flow toward currently available camgirls whereas on "token sites" chatrooms with the most viewers always attract more viewership. Completely different mechanics.
Another mechanic which makes averaging an "okay per hour earning" on pay-per-minute is the fact that it is actually easier for camgirls to work several pay-per-minute at the same time, essentially waiting for a paid show customer on any of them and then logging off from the cam sites once she has a request for private show. Yet great earners often focus on one site at a time, building up their audience there.
Therefore reaching an average $20 / $30 earnings per hour is easier done on pay-per-minute camsites, although it has less potential overall ($20 / $30 per hour is VERY appealing in some countries).
Another point on the low side : those sites totally condemn offsite conversations between camgirls and customers since they're too afraid of future cam shows happening on Skype (given the fact they keep > 60% of the income on average, models are willing to shortcut them).
So developing a personal audience through piggybacking is very hard, you risk being banned if caught - although once a customer is a regular you may be creative to get him to reach out to you off site since the prospect of no cut is very appealing.
Selling recorded videos is the second revenue source for camgirls. What often happens is that they get requests for "custom videos" over time, i.e. a customer want a video made according to a script. They'd sell the video to the initial customer for ~$10 / minute and then put the video on sale also on marketplaces such as clips4sale
or manyvids
at a 5 to 10 times lower price. Customers are generally aware of it and would even encourage it: regulars want the camgirl to run the best business possible.
Although not only camgirls sell on clip sites, some camgirls pull in several thousands of dollars in sales monthly on those, many pulls in hundreds of dollars monthly. The clip site is responsible for bringing traffic and the model gets a 60% revenue share on the sales.
Very successful camgirls we've talked with reported making over 20% of their income making custom videos (first sale) & over 30% of their income selling the same recorded videos only on clip sites.
Running a membership site is quite popular and some great solutions have emerged like ModelCentro
but I don’t know how much camgirls earn there.
Gift cards / gifts is a big thing for many camgirls because since adult industry kinda like cost efficient payment solutions, gift cards are a very good way of moving money around while getting about 100% of what the customer is spending.
Some US specific solution even allows to turn the gift card back into money and hence has much love from US models: giftrocket (Online Gift Cards and Printable E-gift Cards
).
I'm too sure how much cam girls do pull in gifts / giftcards per month, it's hard to know since gift card are also used as a payment method for videos etc.
2. The different "types" of camgirls:
Although there is no discrimination intended, for illustration sake there are three main stories to consider.
1) On the bright side you have the smart models from the west (or the rest of the world) who decides to get into camming because they have a somewhat "counter cultural" approach and they see the great business opportunities which lies in being a camgirl. They could do something else and earn a great income as well, they sometimes actually have a corporate job as well. These are the camgirls with master degrees etc. It's a beautiful story, it's about empowerment, free-will and independence.
2) In-between is the rather clichΓ© sex-work story (but nonetheless true in many cases) of people who get started because of financial troubles. It's not what they would like to do and they wish to stop once they can get out of it. Given the motivation and the fact they're not doing what they'd like to be doing, they're not likely to develop the greatest incomes.
3) On the shady side, you've got the so called "studios" in rather under-developed countries which list camgirls on the sites, "develop their business" & especially rake in a very large part of their income on the basis that they could not access the necessary internet connection - you need about 6 to 9 Mb/s upload speed to stream good quality - & gear - private location, computer, webcam - (Philippine, Colombia & Romania being great examples of countries prone to 'predatory studios', although this can happen anywhere and does not necessarily happen in those countries either). Even if they generate great revenues, they're likely to receive not so great income. This is an incredibly sad story, but as the access to the various components go cheaper and cheaper it should make it easier for all camgirls to be independents and avoid such net pimps. Still I'd like to point out that camming is considered as the safest sex work by the community.
Also where a camgirl is from does matter when considering its earnings for a variety of reasons (not exhaustive):
- US models can more easily relate to US customers, and US customers tend to have more money (and their english being much better, they can simply engage with more potential customers).
- There are widespread fantasies in countries which can for example make EU models develop a great audience in the US more easily than models from other countries.
- Jetlag is important to consider: camgirls tend to want to work during day-time (in particular when they have a family to take care of) while cam consumption especially happens in the evening / beginning of night time.
Camgirls raking in $3000 + per month often belong to the first group, whereas camgirls in the second group are generally very satisfied if they can bring in $500 to $3000 per month - depending on their needs -. I do not know much about what is exactly going on in the third group, data is hard to come by in adult industry and indeed even more when it's shady as fuck.
3. Information about the distribution of earnings:
From my personal experience and the people in the adult industry I've had the chance to talk to, it would appear that basically the business is very focused onto a very little number of models and customers.
Some customers spend more than $100 000 per year in cam. Period. Who these customers cling to makes rich camgirls, those are the big whales. More classic regulars also spends in thousands of dollars a year, getting into cam can be very very addictive. Of course, skilled cam girls will try to get the best out of those customers & cam sites as well.
It goes around something like 1% of the customers represents about 20% of the spendings & the top 5% represents pretty much half of the spendings. The same goes with models and earnings pretty much. (Hence the difficulty of establishing "typical earnings and also why a camgirl success is not necessarily directly related to the size of her audience)
To build up a better answer (and check onto the above numbers, please correct anything that could be wrong) there's few nice public data sources you can access to:
Looking through posts are a lot of testimony and data points about the various revenue streams. Many thread are also about weekly goals (for example reaching $1000 per week, cheering up one another, camgirls who succeeded would say it etc. so it can give a fairly good idea).
5. The main skill which makes a camgirl earn more:
People tend to think that camming is pretty much only about sex, and hence earning good money as a camgirl is pretty much about having a nice body to show. This is rather wrong.
If you think of it from an economic perspective: adult industry is filled with very good looking performers, so looking good in itself is not a unique value proposition. It's very hard to differentiate on the basis of looking good, and people who only have this asset do compete against each other and drive the prices way down onto marketplaces.
Also most regulars don't really care about seeing yet another panties down kind of show, they want to emotionally connect and share. Connecting and engaging is what creates loyal fanbases of regulars which in turn build up great income, camgirls often describe themselves as 'part time psychologists' ! Looking great does indeed drives eyeball and give more chances to connect.
Hopefully with these insights and the other great answers you can put together the answer you are looking for. Gathering data in this industry is always hard.

A webcam model (colloquial gender-neutral: cammodel; female: camgirl; male: camboy) is a video performer who is streamed on the Internet with a live webcam broadcast.[1] A webcam model often performs erotic acts online, such as stripping, masturbation, or sex acts in exchange for money, goods, or attention.[2][3] They may also sell videos of their performances.
Unlike other sexwork (such as street prostitution), webcam models may operate from the safety of their home. They hence have no need for pimps (which can be seen by prostitutes as "protectors").[4]
Since many webcam models operate from their homes, they are free to choose the amount of sexual content for their broadcasts.[5] While most display nudity and sexually provocative behavior, some choose to remain mostly clothed and merely talk about various topics while still soliciting payment as tips from their fans.[6] Webcam models are predominantly women, but also include noted performers of all genders and sexualities.[7]
