It's for the shift patterns on the automatic transmission
W-winter ( starts in 2nd gear and shifts sooner to avoid spinning the tires for better traction )
S-summer/sport ( starts in 1st gear and shifts later for better acceleration ).
In Winter mode, your shift points are going to be at lower RPMs thereby reducing shift shock which ultimately leads to better traction on wet or snowy roads.
In Sport mode the shift points are higher allowing for the quicker acceleration. You will also experience shift shock a little bit more between the gears.

This button stands for winter mode and summer mode.
During winter mode or wet mode when the car is put into drive the car starts of in second gear for a smoother accl. resulting in less of a chance of the car loosing control during shifts.
During summer mode the car starts in first and drives normally.

The W is for Winter---just for better traction and lower shifts.
The S is for Standard/Sport which is for everyday driving with later shifts.
As answers above but remember that in "W" you are also engaging a higher ratio Reverse gear.
Some people find this out when they have trouble reversing up a steep slope!
if im not mistaken it means winter settings witch auto-maticly changes what gear the car will take off from say a stop light
