Birki’s & Papillio are two names of brands within the Birkenstock family of brands. Like the other brands, Birki’s & Papillio share the same family heritage of more than 200 years of designing and manufacturing comfortable footwear. A complete understanding of the human foot and how it works is at the core of each sandal and clog that they make.
Birki’s & Papillio also have a wonderful line of fun, colorful contoured cork footbed sandals and clogs which are playful additions to anyone’s wardrobe. In comparing Birki’s & Papillio with Birkenstock, the differences are as follows: Birkenstock is more traditional with neutral colors and designs which will stay in style for many seasons to come. Birki’s & Papillio are more daring with their fashion. Every season’s bold new colors, patterns and textures are created so that you can truly wear something unique and fun. Birkenstock uses what is known as the Classic Footbed. It has a fairly pronounced amount of arch support, which is great, but some prefer an arch system which is not so pronounced. That being said, the Birki’s & Papillio footbed has more support than just about any other brand, just not as much as the Birkenstock Classic Footbed. Both Birki’s & Papillio use the same contoured footbed. If you love the Papillio footbed, you will love the Birki’s footbed.
We want you to be happy with your purchase and enjoy years of wear and comfort with every pair. Here are some tips for determining your Birki's & Papillio size:
• If you own a pair, its size and width are stamped on the footbed. The width is indicated by the footprint next to the EU size. An outlined footprint indicates a regular width and a solid footprint indicates a narrow width.
• The difference between regular and narrow is primarily through the toe area of the footbed. When a regular width footbed is held back to back with a narrow width footbed, the loss of width is most obvious at the little toe. The narrow width footbed is also about 1/8" shorter than the regular width footbed of the same EU size, which is why we sometimes recommend sizing up in the narrow width footbed (see sizing charts below).
• Some customers feel the Birki's & Papillio Cork Footbed is roomier in the toe area than the Birkenstock Classic Footbed. It's not so much that the footbed is wider, but it has a slightly more rounded shape in the toe area. Some customers notice this, and others do not.
• If you've ever purchased from us, we may have your size in our records. To inquire about your order history, please call us at (800) 488-8316.
• If you would like to discuss sizing and fit, we’re happy to help! Feel free to call us at (800) 488-8316.
• Please consult the sizing charts below for comparable U.S. men's and women's sizes. The sizing charts are only a general guide.
• When trying on Birki's clog styles such as the Super Birki or Professional Birki , it may be helpful to remove the insoles from the clogs, place them on the floor, and then stand on them when they are outside of the clogs. This allows you to better see how your feet fill out the insoles. In general, the difference from one size to the next is about 1/4". If the length looks fine but the clog is just too roomy, some customers have remedied this by placing an additional insert either on top of or beneath the removable insole.
• Replacement insoles for the Super Birki, the Professional Birki, and the Birki Sport/Outdoor clogs are available from $20 per pair plus s&h. To inquire or place an order, please call us at (800) 488-8316.

A: In the past, Birkenstock has made sub-collections of its sandals, including Betula, Papillio, and Footprints. These brands are all part of the Birkenstock family, and share the same contoured, natural cork and latex footbed design.
The only difference tends to be the material and style chosen for the uppers. For example, Papillio tends to feature fashion-forward, feminine sandals that pop with bright colors and various patterns.
A: Betula was originally licensed by Birkenstock, but is not currently widely distributed in the U.S. While Birkenstock features a mix of leather and fabric uppers, Betula uppers are strictly synthetic. The Betula footbed features the same support that is offered in the classic Birkenstock footbed.
A: Yes, the Yara will make a return in Spring 2017 as a customer favorite.
A: Our non-leather articles feature a cork-latex footbed, an anatomic fit and a moisture transport system to provide you with the same high-level comfort as all our other models.
Birkibuc is made of acrylic and polyamide felt fibers, a material that is lightly buffed to create a textured finish that looks and feels like velvety Nubuck leather. Birkibuc also wipes clean easily with mild soap and water.
Birko-Flor is a skin-friendly, tear-resistant, non-leather material with soft fleece on lower layer. It is made of acrylic and polyamide felt fibers which creates a soft fabric with a smooth leather-like finish. In addition to its versatility, Birko-Flor® is exceptionally durable and easy to take care of.
A: Papillio sandals are made by Birkenstock, but the design of the uppers is left to the Papillio creative team, who pick up on the latest catwalk trends to give you a range of stylish sandals for every occasion. The footbeds are virtually the same.
A: According to the Birkenstock: “Our footbed features proper arch support, a deep heel cup, and adequate room in the toe area – all to help distribute weight evenly for the entire foot. The result is improved posture and balance for greater comfort when walking.”
The Birkenstock footbed is made of resilient cork/latex and is shaped to create a healthy walking environment for your feet. Additionally, the cork/latex blend is pliable and reacts to natural body warmth. Therefore, over time, the footbed yields to the characteristics of an individual foot.
Many long-term Birkenstock wearers know that the longer you wear them, the more comfortable they become. The shape of a Birkenstock follows the contours of a healthy foot.
In labs, industrial kitchens, or at hospitals, materials are required that are resistant to most chemicals, oils, and grease. They are also extremely flexible and adaptable, as well as easy (and antiseptic) to clean. In these settings, the use of ALPRO ® -Foam products have also been proven successful.

Even among those who have enjoyed Birkenstock clogs and sandals for years, there is confusion over the difference between the Birki's and Birkenstock brands. Some people think that "Birki" is simply an abbreviation of "Birkenstock" and the two names are interchangeable. Others fear that shoes sold under the Birkis brand are merely knock-off Birkenstocks of inferior quality made by unscrupulous manufacturers.
In fact, Birki's and Birkenstock are separate companies with a common ancestry, sharing over 230 years of history making top-quality footwear. Birki's was created in 1993 as a separate company led by Alex Birkenstock, a prominent member of Birkenstock's founding family. His vision for the new company was to design fun, colorful footwear using Birkenstock's famous footbeds, materials, designs and tradenames, while leaving the more traditional muted color palette and designs of the original Birkenstock with the parent company.
This model has turned out to be a resounding success! Birki's and Birki-Kids clogs and sandals are now sold in 85 countries around the world.
One of the first things that people think of when they think about what makes Birkenstock shoes special is the company's famous anatomically-molded cork-latex footbed. Thanks to a licensing agreement between the two companies, this exact same footbed serves as the foundation of many of Birki's shoes as well, giving Birki cork-latex models the same standard of comfort, support and foot-health as the Birkenstocks they are based on.
Another key component shared between the two companies is Birkenstock's Birko Flor material. This man-made fabric used in many of Birki's uppers is as soft and durable as leather, while remaining easy to clean and maintain over the long average life of a Birki's shoe. It also allows many models of Birki's and Birki-Kids shoes to be certified vegan for those who prefer no animal products be used in making their shoes.
Even some shoe designs are the same between the two companies, right down to the trademarked model name. In some cases such as the Maria clog, the only difference will be that the Birki's version will have a more colorful design on the upper; a pink paisley or floral pattern, for example. Some Birkis sandals and clogs even feature Disney characters such as Mickey Mouse, Tinkerbell, or Winnie the Pooh!
Quality is a top priority for both companies, and using the same materials and components helps ensure that Birki's shoes are of the same quality as Birkenstock's. But another major factor is both companies' commitment to producing their shoes only in Germany, where they can exercise control over the whole manufacturing process from prototype to full-production. This commitment sets Birki's apart from many of its competitors who have offshored manufacturing to Eastern Europe or Asia, often at the cost of solid quality control.
Savvy consumers know that they are wearing 230 years of quality Birkenstock craftsmanship every time they slip on their favorite Birki's clogs or sandals. Why not make your next shoe purchase a pair of fun colorful Birki's?
