What Age Pet Should You Get?

You have decided that you are ready to take a pet into your household, but aren't sure what age pet do you get. Should you get a baby, should you get one just past babyhood, an adult or maybe a senior? Here are some things to consider at each age group (this would relate to cats and dogs).

Baby - All baby animals are cute, until they start destroying your house. Depending on the type of pet you are looking at, they may not potty train as fast as you would like, and as a result, you will need to get your carpet stain treated. Little ones also like to scratch, bite and chew up your belongings as well. But, the cute creatures do have some benefits. These include never being in another home so they learn the rules at your house, and don't have to forget what the rules are somewhere else. And of course, they are just fun to play with at that age.

Young - This would be around a year, two years of age. This is a great age because they should be house trained, and beyond teething so they won't destroy your belongings. They are still full of energy and want to play. But, because you got your animal from somewhere else, it may have some behaviour in it that you don't like, and you may have difficulty getting rid of. Your pet will already have its personality established, so this is a benefit when picking out a pet as well.

Adult - This is truly an ideal age for a pet. They are house trained, past the teething, and are beginning to mellow out. If you only have one pet, they are much more likely to relax and not need constant attention. Two pets will likely still play together, but they probably won't try to destroy the house in the process. Of course, most people want to start out with the small, cute baby pet, but depending on your house dynamics, an older pet is a better choice.

Senior - While most people wouldn't think of adopting a senior pet, these animals still need a warm loving home. Seniors may have health issues, but they are still as capable as love as a younger animal. A senior pet is great for a home of someone who wants a pet but wants one that is lower energy and will simply keep them company.
