I was laying down getting my eyebrows waxed, I get in the car 5 mins later, drive 1/4 and cramps come where I can't hold it back and I poop my pants. I drive 15 mins home and it's the slimyest mucus with stool, where it's hard to even get out of the underwear. Does anyone else have this problem not even able to hold it back. Like you say to yourself I can do this and you can't you just say hell with it, its coming and I can't hold it back. Is that the inflammation besides we our colon doesn't suck water out of the stool to give us a nice formed dry stool? I feel really my UC is so different from others on this board. I ate a flipping cookie a hour before the "accident" could I have a sugar problem like diabetes I'm wondering. I'm on cipro, this seems to lessen the blood. When I took the 5asa and the rowasa at night for 6 weeks and went back to the doctor he said I was cured, you couldn't tell I had UC, but still I was having "accidents then" so maybe it's something dietary. I'm getting a food allergy test done on June 1st but heck that's a long ways away if you ask me. I noticed if I lay down for sure I have poop when I stand up, what is up with that???? and it's urgent diarreah usually either right away if I'm in the house or if I'm about 5mins leaving a restraurant I poop my pants in the car. Who gets this too anyone?

Life could be so much easier if I just could go around in a van with a built in bathroom in the back that would give some privacy, even when there was a passenger.

You really need to try taking Immodium and some Xanax. I bet you're completely fine at home and as soon as you're out, you have to go! It sounds like it's happening so much for you that it's only natural that you're going to feel major anxiety every time you leave the house. I cannot hold it when I have to go, it's the nature of the disease so I make sure when my flare is not under control that I take Immodium when I'm going to be out.

I've been wearing adult diapers for the past 2-3 years whenever I drive anywhere for longer than 10-15 minutes. 98% of the time it's not used, but every now and again....BOOM! I cover my bases that way since this crappy disease (pun intended!) doesn't really give us much choice many times...

one reason why I won't go anywhere unless I am driving my own car, by myself.

This is why I sold my car and bought a minivan, took the back bench seat out and put in one of those port-o-potties, no more pooping pants in the car. :)

I swear I almost pooped my pants after reading the last post from pb4. We have a van and have said we should do the same thing. It is sad in a way but hey, at least you can go any time you want without any embarassment. I think we have all had those accidents and sometimes it is just mucus. I think maybe I shouldn't have eaten this zucchini earlier in the week. I feel a lot worse now. I am just making sure to get all the rowasa in every night, taking my meds, and getting some rest.

I have done it more than I like to talk about ....Luckily I live in a rural area, and have hit the woods more times than I can count....however many times it isnt that convenient...I have gotten creative and gone in bags, gym bags, large coffee cups, etc...anything but my clothes....it is much easier to do that when traveling alone BTW.... I recently went this past winter - literally waded in almost knee high snow to a nice big private tree....aaahhhh.....relief... Driving causes me to have cramps and anxiety attacks - no xanax, ativan, paxil, effexor, or anything else legal has fixed the anxiety of driving....Weird thing - sometimes after eating out or travelling home and having massive anxiety attacks fearing crapping myself in front of my wife, as soon as I pull in the driveway and get home - poof....I am fine....however most of the time it is a 5 alarm emergency and I would pay someone $500 to have them step the $%(#* out of my way!!! It is nearly impossible to hold back a mix of bloody mucus mixed pressurized by a wall of methane... I bet one could measure the actual PSI on our sphincters and impress an engineer....

gosh i have had terable problems and i have a 5year old and a 13month old. I live pritty far from town. I aways want someone to go with me. I have such a hard time trying to go by my self and noone understands why. i have had to run in and the kids were asleep and i felt terable and MIL is like well they will take your kids if they catch you doing that. I now just pull over and go behind a building. I have a bedpan in my car to and lots of grocery bags. I usually put a washcloth in my pants for extra protection. I have an extra change of clothes in the car and a cleaning kit for my self, (learned i needed that after sitting in town for 30 min for mom to bring me a change of clothes so i could go to work). it is so embarssing. Before i was diagoned i was doing it alot. I couldn't leave the house. We were out and i had to run through walmart with stains all in my pants. I did it at the putt putt place and had DS so i blamed it on him my DH doesn't even know the problems that i have had i was to embarsed to tell him.

supersaw, I consider myself a rockstar when I can feel the urge come on, and make it 25 feet from my computer to my bathroom without "going in my pants".

Adam, You can get adult diapers in most supermarkets and pharmacies nowadays. 'Depend' is a popular brand.

I have used Depend before but it shows itself unless I wear a pair of really thick pants.

I sure have!! Just a few weeks ago. Thankfully it has been about a 1 1/2 - 2 years before that time. Just like you said, sometimes we have NO choice, the jig is up!! Anyway, what if I would wear panty liners? I am a man, but I need something discreet sometimes, for the mucus and what not...Depends are too big IMO, or at least at this point. Anybody hear use something discreet like liners or something similar? Db

I have it for more than once. I was so embarrassed, ashamed and cried after I got home. Urgency is also my biggest problem. I am a photographer I travel everyday in my van, I wished I have a bathroom too. Just need to remember where are all the clean bathroom. The best one are starbucks or the newer build gas station (extra mile chevron) just any bathroom that are inside. I even start skipping lunch, it seem to help as well, but it's suck. My urgency usually in the morning don't know why. I am so glad I found this form I don't feel comfortable talking to others and they won't understand what I went through.

I remember twice when I had an accident in the car (but have gone along the side of the road or behind buildings many, many times). I knew I was not going to make it even 20 yards to a bathroom, but had time to quickly rip off my pants or skirt and find something to go in, and used whatever extra clothing layer I had on to clean up. Now in my car I keep a jumbo ziplock bag, and in it a big trashbag (to cover the seat) and a roll of paper towels. For the many close calls when I didn't think I would make, this helped: Loosen belt, zippers, seat belt. Turn the air conditioner cold and open the window. Turn the radio off, ask your passenger to keep quiet too! Breathe deep, tell yourself you are going to be OK Poise make urininary leakage panty liners, I would think they would help and are not bulky.

I feel your pain. I have had uc for 25yrs

I have only pooped away from a bathroom a few times in over 20 years of UC but one of them was about a month ago. As has been posted, anxiety at not getting to a bathroom builds things to a climax... I had driven my girlfriend to an appointment and while she was at her appointment I was driving to a local Golds gym to kill time working out, when I felt the urge coming on. I was calm, knowing that I could go straight to the locker room toilet... only to discover that the gym had closed or relocated and it was now a vacant space for rent. With nowhere to go I then lost it, andc dumped about of ton of muddy pooh in my pants, managing to jam some handy newspapers and garbage bags under my pants to protect my car seat from any leakage. What an odd sensation, to be driving around sitting on that mass of goo! Then I had to decide how I was going to clean up the mess without the public seeing me (no way was I going to sneak into my high rise in this state). By a shear miracle, I have a storage unit at one of those storage centers located in that very neighborhood, and it was a quiet weekday, so I drove there and without a soul around, was able to waddle to my storage locker and change, cleaning up with some old towels and sheets stored in my unit, trashing them and the soiled clothes in garbage bags, change into my gym clothes, use some kitchen cleaning products to wash up, dispose of all the evidence in some big trash bins, and live to see another day with dignity. I now swear to keep an emergency change kit and a blanket to hide under in my car if the emergency ever arises again! But, like I said, this is probably the third time in over 20 years that I have not been able to hold it until a toilet. I have had a few more close calls where it took me half an hour to walk a city block, crouching down to hold it in.

supersaw said... it usually buys me another 10 or more minutes.
I'm telling you guys, CareFree Extra Long, body shape, heavy protection panty liners- they work! I don't generally do a huge load in my pants- if it comes to that, I'm trying to pull off the road & go anywhere & it's just too late. For fairly small bm's & mucous, the panty liners rock- you just carefully peel it off your underwear, dump the contents (in the toilet or woods), wipe yourself down & stick in a new liner. Guaranteed your underwear will be wearable! I also carry ziplock baggies in case there is nowhere to dump the liner- into the baggy it goes until I get to the nearest trashcan. I always have a few extra liners with me- they're wrapped in plastic & folded up really small.
I saw this forum some time back and kept the link intending to join, but didn't. I came across the link again today and started reading the post from "therearemiracles". I laughed until I cried it hit so close to home, but then the tears turned from "funny" laughing to sorrow from understanding how dreadful this miserable disease is. I continued to read everyone else's responses to her humble, "tell-it-like-it-is" post. I can relate to every single one of your experiences. I have been there and done that at least once and probably more than that on other counts.
I started noticing blood in my bm's at about age 18. I went to military docs who couldn't find what the problem was. Usually it would last a couple of days and would leave. I have always had a nervous bowel. Anything new or unusual I had/have to do would cause me to have to sit in the bathroom before the event. Even going into a new store could set it off. I remember having extreme stomach ahces every first day of school and sitting in the bathroom until the last possible minute before I had to leave. I have had several procedures over the years...sigmoidoscopy, barium enema/xrays; I even tried colonics once. Then after the difficult birth of my first child, I had to undergo surgery (anal sphincterotomy) to fix a tear/fissure in my rectum which would break open and bleed with each bm. I was sort of hoping that would fix whatever other problem I was having. Yeah, right.
about 7 years ago, it turned ugly on me after the birth of my 5th child. I was in the bathroom on and off all day. After a colonoscopy, the doc said I had UC and presribed some meds I couldn't take due to me nursing a baby. So I weaned the baby, but wouldn't you know the bleeding stopped as soon as the little one was weaned. I was so glad, though, and hoped it was gone for good. But no.
I have several children, and after the most recent birth in 07, this stuff was so bad I asked my OB for a referral to a new booty doctor. It was a daily battle, every morning, in and out of the bathroom with gas, goo, blood and poo, along with nasty cramping. I saw a regular looking gal on a morning news show about this time talking about having colitis, and she described it just the way I had it. I knew it was time to do soemthing. After the colonoscopy confirming my condition anew, I went on Rowasa and Lialda. The meds immediately took effect and the symptoms completely stopped. I was elated. I was taking 2 Lialda tabs a day and got the Rowasa enema down to only every 3rd day for maintenance. I was not happy about meds for life, but at least I was living outside the bathroom again. So for about 10 months, I was doing great. The doc said the meds should keep it from recurring, so I was really glad it was "gone."
Then my family moved to a new state. I guess the stress of it, although I was not feeling extremely stressed by it, got my condition active again. The move was a year ago, and I have had flares off and on while on my meds during this time. Lately, I have been flaring for about a month. The new doc here upped my tabs to 4 a day and the enema to nightly for 10 days. It subsided some but has not settled down. That's where I am at now.
How many of you think UC is tied in to your head? I know when I am anxious, it kicks up. When I am peaceful, it stays quiet. I just need to find a way to turn off my head. And you are all right in that this stuff has a mind of its own. When it says it's time to go, you must OBEY!!! A 10-foot trek to the bathroom is like a mile no matter how fast your feet fly. Okay, and I HATE the noise my body makes! I have teens now, and they are sort of aware of my condition. But you know how they can embarass you over bodily noises!!!!!!!!!! Fortunately no one has said anything, but I just know the faces they must make outside the bathroom door.
My teen daughter was so sweet the day before I had that last colonoscopy. I told her about what was going on with my body, so she knew. She and I had gone in to Walmart to get something quickly (quickly because I could not trust my bowels). We had gone deep into the store when "it" hit me. I stopped and kneeled down to try and stop what was inevitable. Even Chuck Norris couldn't fight this one off. (hope that made someone grin) No amount of squeezing was going to help. It won, I lossed. It was the noisiest thing, and there was nothing I could do about it. She was so sweet about it and was sorry for me. I was so proud of her compassion and understanding. She walked behind me to the front of the store to make sure I was covered. What a gal! Thankfully no one else was around when it happened.
On another note, I'm annoyed with my Walgreen's pharmacy lately. Everytime I need a refill they don't have enough. They will give me one box of enemas (a week's supply) when I am supposed to get 3 boxes. Just this Friday, my hubby went to pick up my refill of 60 Lialda tabs and they only gave him 10. They told him to come back the next day and when he did they said he'd have to wait til Monday. What's up with that? Then they try to charge me full price when I go get the balance due. UGH! I will not go back there again.
Anyway, I'm glad to be in your company, even though that sounds pretty lame. It helps to know I'm not alone. Thanks for letting me vent. It's been in me for years. Guess I'll go hit the bathroom now, LOL.
