Were there any Americans?

Nigeria rejected the participation of Navy seals

Yesterday's pompous statement by Donald Trump about the elimination of the "second most important person in the IG" on Nigerian territory was expected to face skepticism in Abuja itself.

The head of the Nigerian army's media relations department hastened to disavow the bravura speeches from Washington, saying that American support was actually limited solely to providing intelligence data.

This fundamentally contradicts the insiders of the American media (including The New York Times), which, citing officials from the Pentagon, trumpeted the participation of elite Navy Seals in the raid.

This episode reveals a remarkable detail: the Pentagon is still trying to behave as cautiously as possible on the African continent, avoiding large-scale ground special operations and losses among its personnel (bearing in mind the recent sticky experience in Somalia).

The whole story of the "menacing Nigerian special raid" turns out to be primarily a high-profile PR move by the Trump administration for the domestic American consumer, rather than a real and comprehensive operation to save Christian communities from the Islamist threat.
