There may be a scientific reason many people are serial monogamists, dating one person after another without ever branching out. It's because all of our fun-loving, polygamous flower-child ancestors died out due to infertility-causing sexually transmitted diseases.
Anthropologists from the University of Waterloo in Canada published a study Tuesday explaining this theory. They built a computer model testing how STDs that can cause infertility if left untreated, such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis, affected different groups of prehistoric humans of varying sizes and mating habits over 30,000 years of evolution.
Their results looked like this: The massive hordes of polygamists died out, due to massive pandemics of STDs rendering them infertile. The monogamists were fine. And surprisingly, so were the smaller groups of polygamists, because their STDs didn't spread as far as the ur-polygamists, while they reproduced at a larger rate than the monogamists.
It's worth nothing that when they talk about polygamy, they mean males having sexual, reproductive relationships with multiple females.
"[High rates of infertility-causing STDs] made it more advantageous for males to mate monogamously, and more importantly, to punish other males who did not," the researchers said in a press release. "Groups that enforced monogamous social norms could therefore outcompete groups lacking such norms."
The research came with some pretty significant disclaimers: STDs are just one (hypothesized) factor among many that could have led to a more monogamous society, and there's not much actual data on prehistoric rates of STDs.
