A massive Swansea-based cannabis trafficking operation was dealing in hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of the drug, a court has heard. Joshua O'Sullivan was in charge of the operation buying and selling multiple kilos of cannabis and employing 'professional couriers' to transport cash and drugs around Britain. Swansea Crown Court heard the enterprise was taken down following an investigation by Tarian, the southern Welsh organised crime unit, which included tracking the movement of cars and carrying out covert surveillance of a flat in Swansea Marina. O'Sullivan has been jailed for 58 months and one of his trusted couriers, Emmanuel Adewole, has been jailed for 33 months. Sending the defendants down, a judge said the cannabis trafficking operation had been conducted on a 'commercial' scale. Dean Pulling, prosecuting, said in the early part of this year the organised crime team were investigating a drug supply operation using courier routes into south Wales which was thought to involve wholesale quantities of cannabis. As part of the investigation - known as Operation Drive - police began monitoring the movements of a blue BMW car and on May 14 the vehicle was picked up travelling westwards along the M4 to Swansea. The prosecutor said covert observations were kept on the BMW as it drove into Swansea Marina and stopped outside a block of flats on Trawler Road. As the officers watched, a male - later identified as Adewole - emerged from the flats and handed the driver what appeared to be a shoe box before going back inside. The court heard the car was monitored as it headed back along the motorway before being stopped by Avon and Somerset Police just after crossing the Prince of Wales Bridge into England. The prosecutor said covert observations were kept on the Trawler Road apartment block and on May 30 O'Sullivan was seen attending the property before setting off on foot with a Nike holdall which appeared to be 'full'. Adewole denied being involved in drugs and explained the presence of the large amount of cash in the flat by saying he didn't trust banks. The year-old refused to reveal the PIN for his phone. The prosecutor said despite not having the PIN for O'Sullivan's phone, officers were able to use forensic software to access the device. On the iPhone they found a 'veritable treasure trove of messages' including those on the secure messaging app Telegram which showed he was involved in the wholesale buying of multiple kilo quantities of cannabis from suppliers around the UK stretching back to December Messages also showed O'Sullivan was using a series of 'professional couriers' to transport large amounts of cash and cannabis around the country. Mr Pulling said it was impossible to put a precise figure on the quantity of cannabis trafficked but it was the prosecution case that it was 'beyond 40 kilos' and with a value than ran to hundreds of thousands of pounds. Joshua O'Sullivan, of St Leger's Crescent, St Thomas , Swansea, had previously pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis with intent to supply, and Adewole, of Meridian Wharf, Trawler Road, Swansea Marina, Swansea, had previously pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of cannabis and possession of criminal property - namely money - when they both appeared in the dock for sentencing via videolink from HMP Swansea. The prosecutor said additional charges had not been laid against O'Sullivan despite the contents of his phone on the understanding that he would be sentenced for the entirety of his criminality. O'Sullivan has previous convictions including offering to supply cocaine and two for possession of cannabis with intent to supply. Adewole has no previous convictions. Matt Murphy, for O'Sullivan, said the defendant was concerned about the impact of any sentence of immediate custody on his family including his nine-year-old daughter with whom he has regular contact. He said his client had been 'entwined in drug misuse' since being a juvenile and saw dealing as a quick way to achieve a 'better lifestyle'. The advocate said being arrested and remanded into custody had been a salutary lesson for the defendant. David Singh, for Adewole, said the defendant had been candid with the Probation Service, and said his client's reasons for getting involved in the drug dealing operation were entirely pecuniary. The barrister said the defendant knew dealing carried the potential for significant financial rewards but also significant risk if caught. Recorder Christian Jowett said it was clear from the messages found on O'Sullivan's phone and the quantities of cash and cannabis involved that he was at the top of an operation which was buying and selling cannabis on a commercial scale. With a one-third discount for his guilty plea, O'Sullivan was sentenced to 58 months in prison. With a one-quarter discount for his guilty pleas - which were entered later in the court process - Adewole was sentenced to 33 months in prison. The defendants will each serve up to half those sentences in custody before being released on licence to serve the remainder in the community. O'Sullivan walked out of the hearing as his sentence was being handed down. The court heard the driver stopped by Avon and Somerset Police is subject to ongoing court proceedings in Cardiff.
