NFL picks against the spread, Week 17: Will the Cardinals beat the Rams?

We’re on to Week 17 in the NFL, with the final regular-season games being played on Sunday. That means it’s time once again for our weekly look at the point spreads in order to help you win some money.
Last week, Steven Ruiz went 6-9-0   (104-103-6 overall) and Charles Curtis went 5-10-0 (101-119-6 overall) .
We now go to each of them for comments before their picks.
Charles:  OK, let’s go … the quest for the return to .500 is here. All I need is to go … 18-0. Welp. Sorry I lost you money this year.
Steven:  You didn’t lose anyone money, Charles. Our dedicated readers know what to expect from you by now. Now, down to the important business: I need a good week to keep my streak of finishing over .500 alive.
The Jags are locked into the top overall pick and don’t have much to play for. The Colts, on the other hand, need this game to have a shot at the postseason. So I’ll back the home team with something to play for.
Didn’t take long for the reminder that betting on Week 17 games is a futile endeavor, but I have a job to do. I don’t know how many teams I trust to cover a 14-point spread, but the Colts are not one of them.
I wouldn’t touch this game. But it feels like one of those one- or two-point contests, and I don’t trust the Cowboys’ defense enough to back them.
The Cowboys have quietly become the NFC East’s best team after Alex Smith’s injury. The offense is serviceable and the defense is no longer a disaster. We can’t say the former about the Giants right now.
Yes, I’m aware Mason Rudolph is starting this game. And yet I still think the Steelers can cover.
The Browns are dealing with a COVID outbreak and I could see the offense struggling for a second straight week as a result. Cleveland will win, but it’ll be a low-scoring affair.
New Orleans is in the hunt for the top seed in the NFC, so they’ll pile up the points against Carolina and win by 10, at least.
This is one of the easier picks of the week. The Panthers have nothing to play for, while the Saints’ Super Bowl hopes are likely hanging in the balance given how tough a trip to Lambeau in January could be for an aging quarterback like Drew Brees.
The Jets almost beat the Patriots the last time these two teams played, so I’ll take the points.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a lot of Jarrett Stidham on Sunday, and the Jets have beaten much better teams in recent weeks.
A big spread for two flawed teams but the Vikings are less flawed. So Minnesota it is.
The Lions have somehow fallen even further down into the abyss after firing Matt Patricia. While the Vikings aren’t in great shape themselves, they are a few tiers better than the Lions and should have no problem covering here.
They’ve been keeping games close while losing them and they just lost to the Bucs by four. What’s changed? Not much.
The Bucs are rolling and the Falcons’ close call in Kansas City was probably a fluke. Tampa Bay seemed to figure things out in the second half of the first game against Atlanta. I wouldn’t be surprised if they carry over that momentum and blow this one out.
The Bengals have been extremely feisty as of late, but Baltimore has a lot to play for and has been blowing out some bad teams. I don’t mind taking them to win by that much.
The Ravens look like the 2019 version of the team all of a sudden, and we know how these matchups went last year. Reminder: It was not good for Cincinnati.
Man, this is a tough one. In this case, with both teams playing for either seeding or postseason spots, you take the better squad, and right now, it’s the Bills.
If seeding actually mattered this year, I’d be more inclined to pick the Bills. But I fully expect Sean McDermott to rest his starters as he did last year in Week 17. That’ll give Miami the edge.
Patrick Mahomes will sit, and I imagine other starters won’t play much or at all. And maybe Justin Herbert tries to end an awesome rookie season on a high note.
If not for Anthony Lynn, the Chargers may have beaten the Chiefs in the first matchup. With Mahomes out, this should be an easy win.
The points are calling out to me but whatever, I’ll back league MVP (that’s right, I’m declaring it now, and it’s not exactly the hottest of a takes) Aaron Rodgers.
Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports
I almost took Houston but man, the Texans are a mess beyond their QB. This feels like a Derrick Henry game, so I’ll take the large amount of points. That said, my faith in either side of this bet is small.
I’m with Charles. The points were enticing, but I don’t know if Deshaun Watson has anything left to give, and Henry might run for 250 in this one.
I guess I’m taking the team that showed flashes of talent over the team that occasionally played spoiler. That should tell you how passionate I am about betting on this one.
The NFL could make this game a lot more interesting if they deem it a “loser leaves town” game for the two quarterbacks. I’ll go with the Raiders because they do have the better QB in this one.
It’s the Two Flawed Teams Bowl! I will back the better defense and that John Wolford guy who Steven thinks could make Los Angeles’s offense more interesting .
I’m taking the Rams but not because of John Wolford. Instead, I’m taking them because I believe Brandon Staley’s defense matches up well with the Cardinals offense.
The Niners have burned me far too many times in 2020, so I think they lose but keep things close.
The Seahawk defense is playing good football and the offense showed some signs of life in the second half of the win over Los Angeles. Besides, my New Year’s resolution is to not bet on Nick Mullens or C.J. Beathard anymore.
I want to take the Eagles so badly and hope that Washington wins the NFC East at 6-10. But no, I think WFT is good enough to win this game.
Alex Smith is back! Now, he hasn’t been very productive when healthy, but at least he won’t sabotage WFT’s very good defense.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady is set to make his 10th Super Bowl appearance on Sunday. He's been in the NFL since 2000, which often prompts Rovellian tweets like, "Apple's most popular product the first time Tom Brady played in a Super Bowl: The iPod, first generation."
He's old. He's been around forever.
But on Wednesday, Tom Brady -- or at least whoever runs his social media pages -- got in on the joke.
When the Sporting News Twitter account shared two photos from Brady's progression in video games (NCAA Football 99 and Madden 21), Brady brought back...
The Kansas City Chiefs narrowly avoided a massive COVID scare as Adam Schefter reported that the team had to intervene to stop haircuts with a barber who had tested positive for the coronavirus on Sunday.
While Patrick Mahomes was among the 20-plus players and staff to have appointments scrapped, the same couldn't be said for receiver Demarcus Robinson and center Daniel Kilgore.
The two players were placed on the COVID-reserve list due to the close contact with the barber. But on Wednesday, Schefter added an unintentionally hilarious detail of the whole scare:
Kilgore's haircut was ended before the actual...
With just days to go until Super Bowl LV in Tampa, the last thing either the Chiefs or Buccaneers want to face was a COVID-19 outbreak. On Wednesday, we learned just how close the Chiefs came to realizing a possible worst-case scenario.
Chiefs receiver Demarcus Robinson and center Daniel Kilgore were placed on the COVID-reserve list this week after getting their hair cut from a barber who tested positive for the coronavirus.
But according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the list of players and staff scheduled to get their hair cut from the barber exceeded 20 and included Patrick...

We close out week 17 NFL betting with a matchup between Washington (6-9), and the Eagles (4-10-1). The game kicks off at the Lincoln Financial Field, in Philadelphia, PA. Neither team is particularly dominant, although Washington has a good defense and the Eagles have a good rushing game. Last time these two teams met in September 2020, Washington dominated with a 27-17 win. Now, let’s see if there is anything in the numbers that gives us an indication of how to bet on this NFL match. Washington QB Haskins has 1439 yards, 5 TDs, 7 interceptions. Wentz, his opposite number, has 620 yards, 16 TDs, and 15 interceptions. You may want to bet on the Eagles in this crunch match!
