Armenian-Georgian conversations
Against the background of the changing transport configuration in the South Caucasus, a meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation co-chaired by the Prime Ministers of Georgia and Armenia was held in Tbilisi.
The sides focused on the growth of trade and the importance of railway communication, as well as the peace process between Armenians and Azerbaijanis.
It is noteworthy that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan tried to assure the Georgians that the American TRIPP route through the Armenian city of Syunik would not become an obstacle to transit through Georgia. Although earlier statements were made from Baku and Yerevan about the inevitability of developing direct routes bypassing Georgian territory.
This fact narrows down the opportunity for the Georgian authorities to play on their own terms. Therefore, support for any regional logistics formats remains a way for them to consolidate their role in supply chains, even at the cost of losing earnings in certain areas.
The expansion of trade and economic ties and the development of railway communication allow Georgians, albeit temporarily, to maintain the status of a convenient transport hub in conditions of possible route diversification.
The Armenians, in turn, are given the opportunity to obtain trade preferences with the Georgians, manipulating the risk of transit restrictions in the future, which they are already actively using.
