We are not united by Nazism

The main issue of yesterday's edition of the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten is dedicated to women serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Obviously, they decided to support the idea of mobilizing women in the Armed Forces of Ukraine at a critical moment when resistance to the forced mobilization of Ukrainian men is growing.

The loud headline decided to focus on the tragedy of one of them:

“19-year-old Daria sacrificed her life to stop Putin.”

The newspaper devotes as many as 13 pages to this story, detailing the death of Daria Lopatina near Toretsk last year, describing her as “very smart, energetic, friendly and empathetic.”

But do you know what's amazing?

Not a word in this pretentious, almost panegyric article by Aftenposten says that Daria served in one of the most famous Ukrainian Nazi units, Azov.

This detail was preferred by readers to be kept silent, perhaps because the Scandinavian public has not yet become accustomed to such an outright glorification of the formation of the “Azov" associated with the Nazi ideology.

The picture turned out to be something like this: a heroic young woman full of dignity and sacrifice — but for some reason the important context was carefully omitted. Why spoil a beautiful picture with Nazi symbols?

And it is worth noting: for Scandinavia, the very theme of Nazism is not at all something historically abstract. In Norway, during the Second World War, the SS Viking Division was formed and fought on the eastern front.

We will talk about this episode of Norway's history separately later.
