(Reuters) - For Reuters photographer Lawrence Bryant, the events of last Sunday in St. Louis, Missouri, will make him especially vigilant the next time he goes out to cover anti-racism protests that are sweeping the United States.
In a series of dramatic pictures, Bryant captured a couple exiting their mansion carrying firearms which they waved towards the crowd, as they confronted demonstrators making their way to the mayor's home nearby to demand her resignation.
The images, taken at close range, have featured prominently on news websites and in newspapers since they were taken.
Bryant, 45, recalled that on Sunday evening several hundred white and Black protesters walked through an open gate into the community where the couple - Mark McCloskey and his wife Patricia McCloskey - live.
They were met by Mark McCloskey holding what looked like an automatic rifle and shouting "get out!" several times at the crowd. In photographs and video footage of the incident, he wore a pink shirt, beige trousers and his feet were bare.
With places to take cover, Bryant said he was not overly worried at that point, even when the man appeared to cock his weapon.
Then Patricia McCloskey appeared from the front of the house holding a handgun. Bryant quickly became more concerned.
"She had her finger on the trigger and looked nervous and I became a little bit more worried, as there were kids out there and she was sporadically pointing the gun at random people," he recalled.
"I just was trying to make frames. Trying to stay safe, trying to dodge the barrel of the gun and stay out of sight and out of line. I'm a big, Black man and I always have to pay attention to that anyway."
The McCloskeys have said they feared for their lives on Sunday and that protesters damaged a wrought-iron gate at an entrance to the wealthy neighbourhood.
"Their actions were borne solely of fear and apprehension, the genesis of which was not race related. In fact, the agitators responsible for the trepidation were white," their lawyer said in a statement sent to Reuters.
"The McCloskeys want to make sure no one thinks less of Black Lives Matter (protest movement), its message and the means it is employing to get its message out because of the actions of a few white individuals who tarnished a peaceful protest."
Calls to phone numbers listed for the couple went unanswered, and their lawyer declined to make them available for an interview.
Kimberly Gardner, the city's chief prosecutor, said she was alarmed by the videos and that her office was investigating.
"We must protect the right to peacefully protest, and any attempt to chill it through intimidation or threat of deadly force will not be tolerated," she said in a statement.
The St. Louis confrontation has taken on added significance after President Donald Trump, who has already been accused by critics of stoking racial tensions in America, retweeted an ABC News video of the incident. He made no comment.
Bryant said he was pleased with the pictures he took.
On the one hand, he would have liked a longer lens to be able to zoom in on the man and the woman. On the other, the fact that he only had one camera with him meant he captured not just the McCloskeys, but also the protesters around them.
"A lot of the photos out there focus on them holding the guns, but to me that's not telling the whole story," he said.
"I wanted to show there were people protesting peacefully and they came to engage them."

A Hawaii beachside wedding ceremony over the weekend was interrupted by a tropical storm that sent a series of large waves crashing into the service, a video shows. 
Onlookers in the video were seen marveling at newlyweds Riley and Dillon Murphy on their unforgettable day moments before a large wave poured over a barricade at the Hulihe’s Palace in Kailua-Kona.

The couple said they were aware of Tropical Storm Darby, a storm that was expected to bring turbulent weather and rain to Hawaii on Saturday.
During an interview with local TV station KHON, the couple said the storm was more than they expected.
"We were kind of right at the moment where we were going to start moving a couple of things and, yeah, this big wall basically just showed up," Dillon said to the station.
The cake "luckily" survived and no one was injured in the chaos, he added.
The couple said the storm was perceived metaphorically — as both life and marriages bring their own respective, and often unexpected storms, Riley told KHON.

As for Saturday’s ceremony, it continued on past the interruption and partygoers enjoyed a new, slightly wetter dance floor.
"We did end up getting some good pictures with like waves splashing up, and the ceremony was beautiful," Dillon told KHON.
He added: "We didn't have our dance floor, but nobody seemed to mind — at the end of the night we were all like dancing in the mud and it was amazing. The show still went on and it was, it was a really, really fun night."
At the end of the day, the couple spent their wedding ceremony with those who meant the most to them, they said.
"It's so important to come together and to have all of our family and loved ones there," Riley said. "It made it very special."

Rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) is a semi-analytical method in computational electromagnetics that is most typically applied to solve scattering from periodic dielectric structures. It is a Fourier-space method so devices and fields are represented as a sum of spatial harmonics.

The method is based on Floquet's theorem that the solutions of periodic differential equations can be expanded with Floquet functions (or sometimes referred as Bloch wave , especially in solid-state physics community). A device is divided into layers that are each uniform in the z direction. A staircase approximation is needed for curved devices with properties such as dielectric permittivity graded along the z-direction. The electromagnetic modes in each layer are calculated and analytically propagated through the layers. The overall problem is solved by matching boundary conditions at each of the interfaces between the layers using a technique like scattering matrices. To solve for the electromagnetic modes, which are decided by the wave vector of the incident plane wave, in periodic dielectric medium, the Maxwell's equations (in partial differential form) as well as the boundary conditions are expanded by the Floquet functions and turned into infinitely large algebraic equations. With the cutting off of higher order Floquet functions, depending on the accuracy and convergence speed one needs, the infinitely large algebraic equations become finite and thus solvable by computers.

Being a Fourier-space method it suffers several drawbacks. Gibbs phenomenon is particularly severe for devices with high dielectric contrast. Truncating the number of spatial harmonics can also slow convergence and techniques like fast Fourier factorization (FFF) should be used. FFF [1] is straightforward to implement for 1D gratings, but the community is still working on a straightforward approach for crossed grating devices. The difficulty with FFF in crossed grating devices is that the field must be decomposed into parallel and perpendicular components at all of the interfaces. This is not a straightforward calculation for arbitrarily shaped devices.

Boundary conditions must be enforced at the interfaces between all the layers. When many layers are used, this becomes too large to solve simultaneously. Instead, we borrow from network theory and calculate scattering matrices. This lets us solve the boundary conditions one layer at a time. Almost without exception, however, the scattering matrices implemented for RCWA are inefficient and do not follow long standing conventions in terms of how S11, S12, S21, and S22 are defined. [2] Other methods exist like the enhanced transmittance matrices (ETM), R matrices, H matrices, and probably more. ETM, for example, is considerably faster but less memory efficient.

RCWA analysis applied to a polarized broadband reflectometry measurement is used within the semiconductor power device industry as a measurement technique to obtain detailed profile information of periodic trench structures. This technique has been used to provide trench depth and critical dimension (CD) results comparable to cross-section SEM, while having the added benefit of being both high-throughput and non-destructive.

In order to extract critical dimensions of a trench structure (depth, CD, and sidewall angle), the measured polarized reflectance data must have a sufficiently large wavelength range and analyzed with a physically valid model (for example: RCWA in combination with the Forouhi-Bloomer Dispersion relations for n and k ). Studies have shown that the limited wavelength range of a standard reflectometer (375 - 750 nm) does not provide the sensitivity to accurately measure trench structures with small CD values (less than 200 nm). However, by using a reflectometer with the wavelength range extended from 190 - 1000 nm, it is possible to accurately measure these smaller structures. [3]

RCWA is also used to improve diffractive structures for high efficiency solar cells . For the simulation of the whole solar cell or solar module , RCWA can be efficiently combined with the OPTOS formalism .
