If you turn on the pilot and think this is your average sitcom, sit tight and watch three episodes...and I dare you not to be hooked. Allison Janney: there are no words for how talented she is. She embodies Bonnie Plunkett. Even though the acting is different from the I Love Lucy slapstick humor, that's whom she reminds me ofβ€”Lucille Ball. She is that funny. The cast gels like Seinfeld or Friends. I'm most impressed by how they deal with alcoholism and the serious issues/side effects of the disease. I'm laughing so hard one second I can't breathe, and I tear up the next. William Fichtner is a sexy beast and hilarious (on the show Season 3, series reg Season 4). The casting is off-the-charts incredible. This show is so great they actually get away with shooting the leads driving regularly in what looks to be a cardboard, cut-out car that you'd find on the set of your average high school play.

A friend (who is a therapist) told me about this show. We were talking about addiction, and I came home and ordered the first season immediately. I watched the first half in one sitting. Loved it! It is funny, yet poignant. So many truths and fairly realistic about addiction as I understand it. Later, I had a family member who has been in recovery 20+ years if it rang true to him and he said the writing was excellent. In his experience, meetings were done in a circle, not from a podium, but that was just his experience. He said dating while in the first year of recovery is a real no-no and one of first things stressed in recovery so that didn't ring true, but it makes for good TV. Can't wait to watch the other episodes. I'm a new fan.

For me probably the best part is that we see Christy (Anna Faris) and Bonnie (Allison Janney) battle with their addiction recovery, even as they try to prevent Christie's daughter Violet (Sadie Calvano) making most of the same mistakes that they both made. It actually acknowledges that recovery from addiction is an on-going battle, and not a "switch-off" thing (no I am not an addict, but I have friends who were and admit the fact).

Emmy and Academy Award winner Allison Janney stars in this funny and often heart-wrenching comedy from executive producer Chuck Lorre. Bonnie must learn to adjust without her daughter and former-roommate, Christy, around. With a chaotic past behind her and a newly empty nest, she focuses on her marriage to her husband, Adam, and on what she wants to be now that she’s finally grown up. Now more than ever, Bonnie depends on the support of her friends, including the wise Marjorie, the wealthy and sometimes misguided Jill, the overly emotional Wendy and her foster sister, Tammy, who was recently released from prison. Collectively, they help each other overcome their mistakes and stay sober in the face of whatever life throws at them.
