If your Volvo key fob is beginning to malfunction intermittently, it's an indication that the battery is depleted and will need replacement in the near future.
Fortunately, there are easy steps you can follow to replace your Volvo key fob battery at your own expense. Find a clean surface to work on. Place all the tools you will need. Find the battery's hatch and open it using a flathead, coin, or a similar tool. Next, carefully pry the battery from its socket by lifting it on the side that is closest to the key-ring loop. Wear rubber gloves to protect the clips and electronic contact surfaces.
Insert the new battery into the socket after the old one was removed. Make sure that the positive side is facing upwards and that it is securely seated within all clips. Then slide the cover down and toward the key-ring loop section until it is loose and slips off. Then, remove the cover to reveal the mechanical key blade hidden inside. This will be used to unlock your vehicle through the driver's door in the event that the key fob battery is dead or lost.

Note: Some older Volvos use a different type of battery that is called the CR2025. CR2025 batteries have an average thickness of 7 tenths one millimeter lower than a CR2032, so you'll need to be extra cautious when replacing your battery.
