The Tin Drum is a German war and black comedy film that was written by Jean-Claude Carriere and Franz Seitz, based upon the novel by Gunter Grass. Directed and co-written by Volker Schlondorff, the film features David Bennent, Mario Adorf, Angela Winkler, Daniel Olbrychski, Katharina Thalbach and Charles Aznavour. The story starts in 1899 with Oskar Matzerath (played by David Bennent). His grandfather is being chased by the police through rural Kashubia. Oskar gets a drum on his third birthday - a treasured item that he will keep most of his life. When Oskar hurtles himself down a staircase, he injures himself so that he never gets any larger. During an outing on the beach, Oskar and friends spy an eel picker that makes his friend Agnes vomit repeatedly. Alfred then purchases some eels and makes Agnes eat them. She then develops a raw fish addiction and dies from food poisoning. Oskar meets his friends Bebra and Roswitha during World War II. He joins Bebra's music team and includes his strong voice in the act. Oskar starts an affair with Roswitha but it ends quickly after she dies when shot during the Normandy invasion in France. After he returns to Danzig, Oskar says goodbye to return home. By then, most of the city has been demolished and the Russians have nearly arrived. Oskar finally meets his three year old - and gives Kurt his own drum. The family is in hiding as Russian troops invade the city. As they hide in a cellar, Lina is gang raped by Russian soldiers. A Mongolian Sovietic soldier chokes Alfred and tries to make him swallow a Nazi party badge. At Alfred's funeral and the war’s end, Oskar makes the decision to throw out his drum and become a man. Kurt pitches a stone at Oskar and he is knocked out. After this, he begins to grow. Very soon, everyone but Anna Bronski is deported and the city is re-occupied by the Poles.
