The film could be better edited, but the acting and directing are excellent. Though a psychotherapist might wince at Sibyl's attraction to what happens, the filmmaker's story is a credible venture in what psychotherapists self-reflectively deal with. It gets hilarious! But auteur Triet is basically exploring the uncanny condition of narrative self-understanding which has been part of the French cinema verité school of thinking. And she's very aware (as an interview of her attests) of "A Woman Under the Influence" (Cassavetes, 1974) and the Bergmanian "Another Woman" (Woody Allen, 1988).

OK, I admit I’m no Siskel & Ebert protege, but this movie was a total mess. Some dialogue in French, some English. Pick one and stick with it for goodness sake. The storyline cut back and forth between present time and back-flashes of past times. Pick one for goodness sake! What was this thing all about? Maybe it was an expose on how totally messed up therapists are in their private lives? Or maybe how they get messed up due to crazy clients? Honestly, what was the storyline? It got so convoluted, it seemed to tie itself in knots. Give me a good story and I am happy. Give me something too deep and I am suffocating in the miasma. This story made me suffocate. I’d give it -5 stars if possible.

Talk about a film which sets itself up to fail! The two most tiresome types of characters in movies are alcoholics and mental patients, and this film has both. The protagonist is a therapist who gets rid of her patients to write a novel and ends up being roped into babysitting an actress-patient on a movie set -- and even directing a scene in her film. Linking creative writing/movie-making to psychoanalysis (especially Freudian) is a favorite theme of recent literature academics, and normally I'd shoot myself in the head before indulging them. But the film is actually watchable, thanks to its star Virginie Efira, who seems to be in every other French film but remains unrecognized in the U.S. Sandra Huller, playing a movie director, gives an even better, irrepressible, comic performance. (Adele Exarchopoulos has been better elsewhere, and this is the late Gaspard Ulliel's last film I believe ...) The cinematography is decent, and the editing, which relies on many shock cuts, mimics sudden recall of painful memories, or maybe psychosis. It doesn't make for lucid story telling though. But watch it for Sandra Huller.

I could not finish it. As much as I love Adele, this film is a bore.

The real "Sybil" was identified in 1998 as Shirley Ardell Mason, an art teacher who died in 1998 at the age of 75 in Lexington, Kentucky. Flora Rheta Schreiber , who wrote the book on which "Sybil" was based, gave her the name based on the women prophets of Greek mythology, the Sibyls, who spoke with multiple voices.
In present day scenes (set in mid Seventies), Sybil appears to be in anywhere from 25-to-30 years old. But in flashbacks to her childhood scenes when she's around 5 years old (which would be either late 1940's or early-mid 50's), everything (cars, fashions, hair, etc.) appears to be set in 1930's - long before she was even born.

Dr. Wilbur confronting Willard Dorsett over him having left his daughter in the care of such an obvious and dangerously disturbed woman as Hattie Sybil's two male personalities arguing with Dr. Wilbur about them being able to father children Sybil finally confronting and learning to accept all of her personalities while under hypnosis
