Short disclaimer. I am male and American so my biases may be visible.
I am not afraid of subtitles and watch a lot of content from around the world. I have noticed something about animated and live production content from Asia, not just Japan, that is different from other regions. There are often several scenes that are devoted to watching an attractive female character eat. Sometimes a single bite. Other times it is a binge session. They make it as appealing as possible without making it erotic or pornographic. This can happen even when the attractive female is NOT the romantic lead or even B-plot romantic character. I have not noticed the same phenomenon with male homo-erotic or Boys Love anime or live productions. Excluding manga and written content that I have no experience with. When male characters, attractive or unattractive, eat the scene usually focuses on his reaction to the food that was specifically prepared for him by his romantic interest or being sated from binge eating. Not the act of eating. Reactions to food from third parties are often ignored or intentionally neutral. I.e. restaurants, cafeteria, home, etc. This phenomenon doesn't appear to happen with unattractive females though I have noticed it with androgynous or gender-neutral characters. When attractive female characters eat the attention is on the actual act of eating. There may be scenes that don't highlight this phenomenon. These can be attributed to having the audience being directed to what is happening DURING the meal or something else plot-driven.
The immediate answer is sophomoric and typical for a cisgender male aged 18-25 audience. "Watch the sexy girl put something in her mouth." However, these scenes STILL happen in Asian content where the target audience is NOT cisgender male 18-25 years old. Please carefully re-read my first paragraph. Also, I have NOT observed the same phenomenon in content from other cultures created FOR cisgender males 18-25 years old.
So I ask again.
WHY DO ASIANS LIKE TO WATCH PRETTY GIRLS EATS?? Am I missing something?

Different cultures find different human actions attractive. There is also a strong affinity over there for girls tying or untying their hair- especially with untying it. They like to show scenes of girls or boys putting on their loafers by stepping into them and tapping the toe on the ground; it is like a ritual that becomes fetishized. Food preparation, food presentation, and food enjoyment in general is a HUGE cultural thing in Japan.
Remove the whole girls-eating thing from your mind, and just recognize the focus on food generally. In a lot of anime meals are really taken very seriously and characters talk about the food and very often relate certain dishes (like "pork hot pot") to stories of growing up, of their mothers (who traditionally prepare the food at home) and certain dishes raise feeling of nostalgia in characters which they often talk about or vocally think about.
One of the biggest things that hints at a possibly shipping two characters is if the girl cooks the guy a dish that was special to him growing up. It's very often a dish considered utilitarian and working-class- but she does something to it ("I let it cook longer so the flavor had a chance to set") which is always just what his mother did- and BANG the ship sets sail. I don't think this notion exists at all in American culture, because our food is shit and a majority of our most famous 'dishes' are not lovingly prepared on a stove from scratch with fresh ingredients; but either come out of a box; or are mass-produced crap bought at a corporate fast-food joint. Which is basically a small sandwich factory where everything tastes the same no matter which town you're in. We've taken the love, and sentimentality out of cooking and replaced it with mass produced misery; eating for us is just a chore. That's not the case in Japan. Food is a divine thing, eating is something looked forward to and enjoyed; a meal prepared that brings a reaction out of someone is an act of love; this from a culture of rice-growing farmers and fishermen who live on an island where for centuries the evening meal was not guaranteed. So you see the significance of eating logically flows to wanting to see someone who has become an object of affection eating also.

Honestly, I love to cook. When I have someone by my side o cook for, I like to watch the reactions on her face to the food I made her with my own two hands. It's a way of knowing what she likes and dislikes only sometimes she's too polite to tell me what she really thinks of the food. So, if I see a true reaction of love for the food, I know I did something right. Knowing the traditional role in Japan where the male is the provider, it may seem obvious that they may see providing for their significant others enjoyment in the same way I do my cooking. They may see it as doing their part successfully in that part of the relationship. That's just a guess on my part but people seem pretty much the same in nature in most civilized nations.When you love someone you always want to see them happy and content.
