Occasionally, South Korean cinema strays from the rom-coms and the tearjerkers and it dabbles in the bombastic. THE PIRATES is an action-packed period piece blockbuster from 2014, not that western movie audiences are expected to know about this movie. Yes, okay, it's clearly a rip-off of THE PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, or, if you're more charitable, an homage to it. I'm not at all caught up on Korean history, so I'm not sure how much this movie kept faith with what really went down in the year 1388, which was the dawn of the Josean dynasty. THE PIRATES posits that the Chinese emperor had bestowed a royal seal and the name of "Josean" upon the newly founded kingdom. During its voyage across the seas, the Emperor's treasure ship was attacked by a whale and the royal seal swallowed by it. What follows is a frantic race taken up by four disparate search parties to find the whale and retrieve the royal seal. If you crave swashbuckling action, daring skirmishes on the high seas, and some outlandish wire-fu work, this is your huckleberry. That it frequently drops moments of levity - some of which are admittedly of the broad and cheesy persuasion - is the cherry on top. I really liked the two leads. Captain Jang Sa-jung a.k.a. Crazy Tiger (Kim Nam-gil) is a disgraced soldier who now leads a bumbling bunch of mountain bandits, and it's clear he's patterned after Jack Sparrow. Jang Sa-jung is also the love interest to Yeo-sol (Son Ye-jin), the more serious lead character. A pirate with principles, she captains a loyal crew of cutthroats. It takes a minute for these two to meet and interact as the plot spends copious screen time building their backstories. Anyway, they each head up their respective search parties, but the real fun starts once they meet and gamesmanship gets triggered. I thought Son Ye-jin and Kim Nam-gil generated terrific on-screen chemistry. Maybe it helped that they'd starred together before in the South Korean televison drama, SHARK. One supporting character deserves a shout-out. Yoo Hae Jin hilariously plays Chul Bong, a pirate who quits the yo-ho-hoing life on account of his seasickness. There he goes, petitioning to become a member of Crazy Tiger's crew of lowly footpads. I enjoyed his story arc as he ends up being repeatedly demoted and promoted by Crazy Tiger. If you have to steal, steal from the best. THE PIRATES captures the rollicking feel and joyful mayhem of THE PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN. The action set pieces are some of the most outrageous sh-- I'd seen in an adventure film, capped off by the demolition of a village's soaring network of water sluices, although the bandits versus shark sequence was also dope. Note that the plot does try to inject some serious moments to tug your heart, except these moments don't really fly, not in the face of just how aggressively tongue-in-cheek and far-fetched this whole yarn is. I mean, you thought the lazy kid's excuse of "The dog ate my homework" was flimsy, imagine the trepidation of the envoys as they contemplate briefing the Josean monarch that a whale done et up the royal seal. No wonder they said pirates took the thing.

Between pirates, the Korean army and bandits who decide to take to the seas to find their fortune by retrieving a emperor's seal that was swallowed by a whale this movie is at times absurd and a hilariously good time. I have watched this many times when I just needed to laugh

This is not the greatest movie ever made. There are a few flaws - some of the attempts at humor fall flat, mainly because the comic scenes sometimes go on too long. The CGI effects are distracting. I wanted more swordplay and better action choreography. However, this movie is still superior to anything that has come out of Hollywood in recent years. It's not stupid. Orlando Bloom isn't in it, and that alone almost makes it worth watching. The best thing about it, though, is Ye-jin Son plays the greatest film pirate ever. She is fantastic as the captain of the pirate ship. I hope she plays this character again and again.

This is a fun and enjoyable movie, somewhat similar of course to a certain Disney franchise, but it does its own thing and does it well enough that said franchise may have taken inspirations from it for sequels. It is in all subtitles for the digital version but if you don't mind that and want a action adventure this is a good view.

Fun and entertaining! It has good action scenes and the dialogue between the characters is priceless. It does have a moment where the movie kinda drags, and there are some random subplots that weren't really necessary, but overall it's a great popcorn flick. All of the characters are great and have interesting character traits, the plot is ridiculous, but in a funny way, and it will keep your attention from beginning to end! Totally recommend.

Better than Pirates of the Caribbean. All four of them. Even the first one. The Black Pearl one. Over the top plot but very well paced, scripted and acted. Well done and exciting action sequences. Perfectly timed comedy. Oh Dal-su is hilarious as the pirate/bandit in one of his greatest roles (and the dude has been in a TON of movies). Everyone else is good as well. Super fun flick.

The film is in the vein of what our Hollywood pirate films of the 40's and 50's were like. There is much derring do and tongue in cheek not to mention over the top humor in this adventure about a lady pirate and her troubles with the opposing men folk. This swashbuckler sure does and is a fast two and some hours long. There is no wonder why this film was one of the top grossers back in the East.

I think this is the first Korean movie I've seen and the 2 hours went by really quickly. Great combination of swashbuckling fun, humor, and drama. Great CG too. Reminds me of Cutthroat Island except the lead actor and actress did not have as much chemistry on screen as Geena Davis and Matthew Modine did in Cutthroat.

While we’re worried about whether or not we should even be allowed to use the word “retard” in movies like Tropic Thunder , the porn industry is actually flat out screwing the mentally handicapped… apparently. It's all in the trailer for Pirates II .
Maybe you remember a few years ago there was a bunch of noise over the release of a generically named porn movie called Pirates . It was porn, yes, but it was also a massive, big budget movie with big budget special effects. In fact, it was also released in an R-rated, mainstream version (somehow they edited out the sex), and both versions, porn and non-porn set all kinds of crazy sales records.
As with anything that makes a lot of money, now there’s a sequel. Like the first one, the follow-up is a big budget affair, packed with all kinds of special effects. Over 600 special effects shot sin all. It’s called Pirates II: Stagnetti’s Revenge , and the movie’s first trailer has just been released. Like the original movie, this one will be released both R-rated and… whatever rating it is they’re using on hardcore porn these days. Let’s call it XXX. Since they’re doing a mainstream version, well I guess that’s our excuse to cover porn. Happy day.
You can watch the non-sex trailer for the R-rated version of Pirates II below, for the hardcore, porned up version you’ll have to hit their official site … which is definitely not safe for work. Stagnetti’s Revenge will be available worldwide, presumably in lonely hotel rooms and dimly lit DVD stores, on September 27th.
