Watch Out: How Upvc Door Handles Is Taking Over And What We Can Do About It
Types of UPVC Door Handles
It is crucial to select the appropriate replacement upvc handle for your home when your handles are in need of replacement. A locksmith can supply and fit high-security uPVC handles with added security features.
The most important measurements are measurement A (known as PZ) and the length of the backplate (measurement F). Please check these measurements to ensure that your new uPVC handles will fit.
Lever/Lever
A lever is a solid bar pivoted around a point (known as a fulcrum). When you apply force to the end of the bar, the fulcrum will tend to move in the direction of the force is applied. This rotates the force and lets you lift or move things that would normally require more force to lift.
The distance between the fulcrum of the lever and the point where you apply force determines the most effective movement. This is known as the mechanical advantage. The greater the length of the lever more, the greater the mechanical benefit. You can calculate the mechanical advantage by dividing distance from fulcrum point to the point at which you are applying force by distance between the fulcrum's point and the end of the lever.
Levers can also have a variety of effects based on the way in which forces are applied. For example, a class 2 lever is inclined to turn in the opposite direction as the force of effort is applied (like a T-totter). If you press on the handle of a door the force will create similar rotational effects to this.
However, levers don't create energy. They multiply the force by making small amounts of effort applied over a long distance into larger amounts of force applied over smaller distances. Levers are used to lift heavy objects and move massive amounts of cargo. The lever principle is also employed in everyday tools such as crowbars. hammer claws, fishing rods and your own legs, as you are standing on the hand brake of your car.
Lever/Pad
Lever pad handles, also known as upvc door handles, feature levers on both sides to operate the multipoint locks. Lever pad handles are available in a variety of finishes & variations and can be installed on a variety of materials, including UPVC doors, Aluminium doors & Timber Doors. They are sold in pairs for the inner and outer door, with screws and spindles included. They are available in both hand and unhandled versions to accommodate different types of users.
They can be used to replace existing doors made of upvc. The levers are raised to open all the multipoint locks, and the key is turned to lock or close the door. They offer a little more security than the standard lever handles for doors since locking can only be performed by the inside using keys.
They're not as secure as a cylinder bolt however they are a reasonable option to provide extra home security. The only downside is that they do not offer the same level of protection as a cylinder bolt and therefore don't stop external access when the door is left open.
The majority of lever pad upvc door handles that we offer are manufactured by top manufacturers in the industry and are constructed using high quality components. They are also typically supplied with a manufacturer's warranty.
They are typically designed to work with the 92mm lock, or a replacement model called the Paddock Lock. They will have a 92mm centre cylinder on the inside and 62mm on the exterior and be fitted with 2 spindle followers. Some are inserted into the back plate, while others can be removed to allow for different fixing centers.
Lever/Snib

Lever latches are by far the most simple type of door handles. The lever is pushed downwards to open a latch inside the door that can be locked using a key. Certain lever privacy handles work using the same principle however, with the addition of an Snib (like a doorknob).
A snib button can be very beneficial, especially for homes where it's important to ensure privacy or security. If your partner is arriving home late from work, you can apply the snib to ensure they won't be able to enter until they're ready to come in. This kind of handle is also popular in doors that are inside such as bedrooms, where you may need to restrict access from the outside.
In some instances, snib buttons can cause problems, especially if you have older locks or doors that are distorted. If the snib switch is accidentally pressed by someone who isn't familiar with it, the door may shut and lock you out. You can usually gain entry by knocking the door frame or letterbox. But this isn't a good idea.
If your uPVC has a snib we recommend replacing it with a smart lock from the E-LOK 7 Series. These can be retrofitted over pull handle kits that double turn and come with cover plates to conceal the holes that are already present, allowing to ensure a seamless installation. The E-LOK uses a smart app to allow you to open the door with mechanical keys or RFID cards and is able to be set up with passcodes to ensure security and convenience. The system has been tested to 200,000 cycles to ensure long-term durability. The handles themselves are constructed using a solid metal structure and are BS EN 1670:2007 Grade 5 for corrosion resistance.
Lever/Moveable Pad
This popular handle style is used for front doors. It has the advantage of preventing the door being opened without the key from outside in the event that the lock has not been deadlocked. This is achieved by the 'pad'-shaped external handle which locks in the gap between the handles and lock case to prevent the latch from being removed or the door opened.
This handle is designed to be used with uPVC multipoint locks which use split spindle mechanisms. This kind of operation requires the lever handle and the external pad handle to be mounted to the same lock case. This can be a simple modification to the existing uPVC handles, but it might also require changing the lock case or a new set of handles to accommodate this additional functionality.
