Heartbreaking and innovative are the two words that come to mind. I like the subject matter which I don't think has been explored enough by other films. I wasn't a huge fan of the Shakespearian feel (mainly because I am so ignorant of the work), but the acting by the then so young Reeves and Phoenix is phenomenal. That's what kept me watching even though I felt the plot was choppy. I get that this was a low-budget project so I can excuse the flaws. I did want to know more about the peripheral characters but I guess that some of them were so easily discarded or forgotten fits with the subject matter of hustling and survival I am a huge fan of Reeves and the late Phoenix so this was interesting to watch all these years later - and for the first time. You can definitely see the potential in both actors. So heartbreaking that Phoenix didn't get to grow into his talent. This is one of those movies that I will have to watch multiple times to fully appreciate it.
I remember a show called The Big Picture that used to come on MTV back in the early '90s. It was hosted by Chris Connolly from ABC. Back then, he would review movies and do interviews about cool new releases. The Big Picture covered the movie premiere of My Own Private Idaho. I think I still have it on VHS somewhere. I was obsessed because it was all my favorite actors at the premiere like Drew Barrymore, maybe a young Parker Posey. And I recall a quick shot of Keanu Reeves. Ugh...heaven. I wanted to see this movie so bad. It's really funny and sad and TOTALLY holds up. I understand it more now than I did as a sheltered teen. It still breaks my heart in all the same places. I still remember all the dialog. I still love the hell out of River Phoenix. This is a great movie about friends no longer willing to be your friends, isolation, and trying to find "home" in unlikely people and places.
Certainly I enjoy Keanu Reeves films and really miss the very talented River Phoenix, but although the raw stuff was there, I found the story rather disorganized and pointless. OK film, but not a great story.

2+1/2 STARS in all honesty...a forgettable movie
This is the worst movie I have ever seen and I'm a huge River fan. It's impossible to follow, and I tried really hard. It's very gay friendly, so maybe some will like it. For me, it was great actors with absolutely nothing to work with. Zero plot, zero point.
The quality of actors in this film is hard to believe by today's standards. River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves playing street hustlers, and River is gay but Keanu comes from a rich family and has other options. When his inheritance comes in, Keanu goes back to his old life of privilege and River is left hustling on the streets. Ain't that just like a friend.
Gus VanSant isnโ€™t for everyone, but this movie is worth watching. You might also want to watch My Own Private River which is James Francoโ€™s use of the footage.

Keanu Reeves is good in this movie, but River Phoenix pretty much steals the show. I love their chemistry on screen. Itโ€™s pretty groundbreaking that these actors would take these roles in 1991! The story was worth telling.
A great movie, full of angst and it hits the right notes portraying with realism street life in "Wherever. Whatever. Have a nice day."
Keanu Reeves as Scott Favour, brings the right lines to the movie. I can't imagine anyone else playing it like he does...Scottie is a devious deviant, his hidden agenda is for him alone to know...
River Phoenix as Mike Waters had the part down pat, playing it with achingly good flair. You want to help him find his mother and end the loneliness and unknowingness he feels. His narcoleptic episodes and bizarre flashbacks give pace to the movie and helps the tale before us to unfold.
Van Saint pulls no punches, tells it as it is which makes it overall a sad tale with no sight of resolution...
Awesome movie and awesome actors of our time and generation.

My Own Private Idaho is one of those films that you either love or you hate. Obviously it's full of very strong adult themes and is definitely not for people who are uncomfortable with sex or sex workers. Also not something to watch with your parents!
The film itself, the way it is shot, is beautiful and thoughtful. The acting from River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves is powerful, meaningful and emotive. The story is certainly something and deals with important themes.
All in all, My Own Private Idaho has a lot to say for itself and left me thinking about society and our choices. It's worth a watch if you have an interest in cinematography, thoughts about humanity and society and the most obvious reason: if you are a big fan of either River or Keanu.
I can only say that I ADORE this film. It is one of my favourite films of all time. And I really like film. However, it is a slightly peculiar indie film. It is certainly not for everybody. Maybe I'm just weird enough to 'get' it.

Gus Van Sant's direction is impeccable. The glorious landscapes, the grime of the city and some of it's more unsavoury inhabitants, and the characters all add up to a stunning piece of film making. I'm not going to give any spoilers for those who haven't seen it. Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix are both outstanding. But it is River who steals the show, perhaps predictably, but his character is the main protagonist and as such, the story hinges around him. He was a stellar young actor who could have gone on to achieve great things, to have such a sad end is truly heartbreaking. However, even though he was so young, he left some excellent films behind him and this is most certainly one of them.
My Own Private Idaho (1991) is an independent drama film directed by Gus Van Sant (Drugstore Cowboy, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers' Under the Bridge). It stars River Phoenix, Keanu Reeves, James Russo, Flea, Udo Kier, Jim Caviezel, Brian Wilson, and Grace Zabriskie. It is films like My Own Private Idaho that have cemented his reputation as one of the most acclaimed independent film directors, along with such luminaries as Jim Jarmusch. Idaho is one of Phoenix's last films and is arguably his most acclaimed, along with the Stephen King adaptation of Stand By Me (1986).

Phoenix plays Mike; Reeves plays Scott. They are two friends who each embark on a personal journey in order to discover their true 'Self'. The film opens with Mike on a deserted stretch of highway. In Idaho. Along this weird and wonderful road trip they encounter all kinds of people and problems. Mike is poor, Scott is rich. They are best friends. They are street hustlers. They are also both messed up. They sleep with men and women for money, although Scott hardly needs to for he will inherit a fortune.

Part of their journey sees Mike trying to locate his long lost mother, firstly through his older brother (James Russo) and then in Italy. Things get messy towards the end and Mike finds he has come full circle on a lonely stretch of highway. Idaho marked a major turning point in the career of Phoenix, who would have gone on to star in Interview with the Vampire (1994); Reeves did star in a vampire film after Idaho, Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992). Phoenix had previously been nominated for an Oscar for his role in Running on Empty (1988).

My Own Private Idaho is loosely based on William Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part 1, Henry IV, Part 2, and Henry V.
Heard a lot about this film, so thought Iโ€™d watch. So disappointed. The director, it seemed, was trying too hard to be avante-garde. The stills were staged rather than situational and truthful. He should have stuck to more gritty stills. Showing the reality of this lifestyle choice. Instead, it came across as fake, phoney and pretentious. I felt like I was watching actors over acting rather than real people in real life situations. Gutted really, it could have been amazing!
This film is a surreal character study, following the misfit lives of a small group of 20 something rent boys. It's a strange sort of film. I have never seen anything else quite like this. The best way to give you a better impression of what I mean is to say that it shares some parallels with Oliver Twist, if the Oliver character was older and gay, if his workhouse was really a brothel where he squatted illegally and where Fabien is really his pimp.

I first saw this film when I was far too young to understand what any of it was about. But, somehow, it made a big impression on me. So, I looked this film up not so long ago to check it out and to see if it left me with the same feelings as it did before.
I found it kind of sad, it's strange, because I find it heart warming and yet some how heart breaking. Sweet yet bitter!

We see the late River Phoenix playing the Oliver typed role, led by his very own Artful Dodger in the form of a young Keanu Reeves.
I was originally touched by the close friendship that they seemed to share. It seemed one of a real love that transcends sexual attraction.
There is some one-sided attraction going on in there; which the other is well aware of and doesn't mind, and I think that's what originally touched me. The concept of a straight guy being friends with a gay guy that is in love with him and it being a non-issue: A true friendship.
Watching this film again however I have a completely different take on it.
Now, it looks to me as if the whole friendship was just as one sided as the sexual attraction and that makes this film even more sad for me.

The only real plot is that one character is in search for his mother while the other tags along to hide from his father.

Even though this film is not for most people I still think that it is well worth a look. It has a bit of every movie genre in there: Road Trip, Coming Out, Coming of Age, Living happily ever after, and those ones that don't really end; the ones where you're faced with the cruel fact of life where not every story has a happy ending.
Itโ€™s an okay movie to watch. Quite heavy and doesnโ€™t seem to be going into any direction. I was mainly interested in it, because it has Keanu Reeves in it, and although his performance was good, the movie itself isnโ€™t great. Wouldnโ€™t pay to watch it if I could turn back time.
This film is very typical of gay love stories in the nineties- struggles and unrequited love. That being said, a movie about male escorts, loosely based on Shakespeare, where some of the speech is Shakespearean but spoken by a group of ritalin rats is definitely unique. It's not a bad unique, the film is great.
The gay bit of me also wants to add that Keanu Reeves, shirtless, in skinny jeans and a choker is very hot.
I decided to watch this film out of curiosity after seeing a programme about River Phoenix. No, the story isn't dressed up like Pretty Woman glamourising the seedier sides of society, but stick with it and it will leave you thinking about it for days afterwards. River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves are amazing in this. You really feel for all the characters in this film.
