"Mum and Dad" is a United Kingdom take on sadistic families such as those in the [[ASIN:B0001KZNYM The Texas Chainsaw Massacre [1974] ]] or The Firefly family of [[ASIN:B00009MGEM House of 1,000 Corpses [2003] ]]] fame. The story is that of a young Polish girl working at an airport, who is lured to the home of a co-worker where she is then enslaved for torture and mutilation by a perverse and psychopathic cannibal family. However as it's set in England, there are no guns, and it's grittier for it; not least because a female Polish immigrant worker was abducted and then murdered in Scotland in similar circumstances not that long ago, and of course it throws up the none-too-distant shadows of English serial killers Fred and Rosemary West and their home dungeon. Olga Fedori plays the Polish girl Lena very well, initially capturing the polite, friendly yet slightly nervous manners of a foreigner trying to fit in without causing offence and yet at the same time remaining cautious. It's this caution that means she has to be tricked so that she misses the last bus, and has no option but to accompany her co-worker, the "Daughter", back to her home ... and into the clutches of Mum and Dad. Dad gets his kicks from chopping things up, Mum gets hers from playing with it first, and the children assist them with their perversions in order to stay in their good books, gain favours, or at least to avoid punishment. Lena finds her ability to move freely and communicate restricted by foul means, and realises very soon that if she is going to survive and escape, she is going to have to play along as best she can. Lena's transformation from the quiet foreign worker through to someone with a battered, abused, desperate and scheming survivor mentality is excellently realised by Fedori as the story moves horribly on towards its conclusion. There were a couple of moments where I thought it might have got a tad silly - at a pinch, the Christmas Day scene could have been British TV's "[[ASIN:B001CWLFJK The Royle Family]]", just envisaged as psychopaths - however overall there was a genuine sense of monstrosity in isolation. The isolation was another key factor, the irony of the story unfolding next to an airport where thousands of people would pass through, yet all anonymous and all en route elsewhere, the scenes broken by planes taking off overhead giving a sense of transience above and stagnation below. "Mum & Dad" isn't without its gory scenes, but it doesn't heap it on unnecessarily and gore isn't the main theme here, it's the bizarre familial relationships between the characters that Lena needs to unlock if she is ever to make good her escape. A good, well directed and well-acted British horror.

Mum & Dad was something of an enigma for me. In horror films you come to expect plenty of scares, and/or a perpetual sense of dread, or just plenty of shocking violence in the current trend of goreporn horror which, I suppose, Mum & Dad would nestle under to a certain extent. But this film messed with my perception of horror. The moments of stunning brutality and awful, depraved violence are inserted into the context of what, at times, seems like the most normal, unembellished British family you could meet, who might even live next door to you. These contexts sometimes dominate the screen, such as the various breakfast scenes where Mum's cooking, Dad's getting ready for work, kids are nattering over the breakfast table . . . but then you notice things in the scene that are extremely out of place, elements of horror made almost commonplace by the setting, and then real brutality comes flooding back to you. It's disturbing because for a moment you were almost very comfortable with the scene, but all of a sudden you will be reminded of the shocking depravity that underpins this 'normal' family. This includes moments where Lena is being a 'good girl' and gaining praise from her extremely disturbed 'parents' - the pleasant idea of being coddled and loved by a parent, any parent, or of getting one up on your annoying sibling, comes rushing to you immediately, despite the fact that you know very well these people are far from loving parents. Throughout the film I was constantly unsure whether I was watching a black comedy or a true horror, and this disorientation only made the film's particular brand of horror more effective. The familiarity of the setting, the somewhat normal family interactions wrapped around that violent core are often semi-comical, particularly with the 'Christmas' scene at the end. But again, all of a sudden, you will be reminded of the film's true nature with a gut-wrenching jerk. This film won't be for everyone. As evidenced by a number of the negative comments here, even self-professed horror junkies have admitted to finding this one just a ~bit~ too far across the line. I feel fervently that that is due to how close to home, to family life, it really hits. It's a clever, disturbing, horrific movie. The gore is nothing new, but the depraved concepts behind the film might be just a bit too much to stomach for many movie watchers. Still, I think it's a great, unsettling addition to my horror catalogue.

!WARNING!CONTAINS SPOILERS! Lena(Olga Fedori) is a young Polish woman working as a cleaner at Heathrow Airport. She is befriended by another cleaner Birdie(Ainsley Howard) who in turn introduces Lena to her brother Elbie(Toby Alexander). One night, Lena misses the bus home, and Birdie offers to help, telling Lena she can stay the night at her place, as its only a stones throw from the airport runway. The three friends all go to the house, and Lena is left alone inside. She goes looking for Birdie and is hit on the back of the head. When Lena comes to she comes face to face with Mum(Dido Miles) and Dad(Perry Benson). Whether she likes it or not, Lena is now part of the family, and she knows that if she breaks the house rules, she gets a one to one audience with Dad, who as Mum says 'has his ways'. Although director Steven Sheil cites Pete Walker's Frightmare and Dario Argento as influences, this film in my opinion is more reminiscant of gritty American horrors such as John Mcnaughton's Henry:Portrait Of A Serial Killer and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series. It does have a unique Britishness about it though, especially in the twisted Christmas scenes. The acting is all top drawer. Perry Benson IS Dad. From the moment we are introduced to the character, Benson makes the role of Dad his own, and gives a superb performance. The rest of the cast are also excellent. There is no background music to sooth the senses, so the viewer has to fully concentrate on the catalogue of horrors put before them. Interestingly enough, its not particularly gory as most of the atrocities are commited off-screen, but like Henry the tone and style does make it an uncomfortable viewing experience. The characters motivations are left deliberatly cloudy, as is the origin of Birdie and Elbie. Are they Mum and Dad's own children, or have they at some point been imprisoned and indoctrinated themselves. A lot has been made of the similarities between certain aspects of the film, and the real life exploits of serial killers Fred and Rosemary West. I think its important to remember that the director's main goal was to make a low budget British horror film, with a very tight budget and shooting schedule. Considering these restrictions, I think Sheil has created a low budget masterpiece, that I hope will increase in stature just as Frightmare has, thirty plus years later. Highly recommended to lovers of British horror, which is a very diverse church, and low budget horror in general. An unreserved 5 out of 5. Nice extras on the DVD as well.

An excellent story with unsettling cinematography. A slightly disturbing tale of the abduction of a young girl by a very dysfunctional family. A very entertaining British horror movie, would recommend.

This is a good scary film. In the last century we have the 70's with blood filled Westerns, and over the top colour, then we get the stalker/slahers of the 80's, the Devil on earth glut in the 90's, and the comedy slash/pisstakes of the 00's. It seems to me that now we are thankfully beyond "video nasty" mentality, we can enjoy the return of the bloodfest. this is a cross between the Texas Chainsaw massacre, (mad family, living in a gory twilight world of their own creation) and a Fred West documentary. On the plus side it has a believable story and both the acting and SFX are of a high standard. The leading lady is very good and she portrays a young woman suddenly trapped in a horror house with perfection. The first encounter with Mum, is a good chill and gives you a taste of what is to come. On the minus side I feel the Dad role, although well acted was miscast. When I first saw him I laughed my head off, because he just doesn't fit the rolemodel at all, with hindsight I suppose that was the point, but for me it just did not work. The gore is plentyful and comes in unexpected ways. The good thing about it is that the gore has obviously been handled by experts, it is first rate and def not for the squeamish. An 8/10 for me, this would have definately been classed "nasty" so get it now before they ban them again!

I'm going to start this review by admitting that I'm about to give this film 4/5 stars. I'm doing this now because I'm slightly ashamed to admit it. Basically, this film `Mum and Dad' is pretty sick. I'm not sure what sort of person enjoys watching something like it, but, apparently, I'm it. A young cleaning girl at a British airport is lured home where she's held captive by `Mum' and `Dad' (obviously), plus their equally twisted offspring. If your mind is as twisted as mine, you can probably imagine some of the things that she witnesses and subsequently happens to her while she's shackled and chained. So, if you want to watch something like that then you should enjoy a film as brutal as this. It's made on a shoestring of a budget, but it doesn't really need many special effects to get its point across. It's one of the rare cases where a film really doesn't need a budget to make it any good. If you're in the mood for something sick, give it a go. Also, if you used to watch the happy-go-lucky BBC sit-com `You Rang M'lud?' in the eighties, then you might remember the innocent and loveable `Henry' from the show. Now watch him in Mum and Dad and you'll never be able to look at him the same way again.
R. Griffiths Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 March 2009
Yes, this is extremely uncomfortable viewing at times but it is a superb example of what can be achieved with a tiny budget and a small window for production and filming. The story of a Polish girl lured back into the family from hell, it is full of black humour and sadistic moments. The relationships between the existing family are very unsettling and the new "daughter" upsets the apple cart and, in turn, somewhat upsets theirs. It is the setting, the acting and the truly surreal moments which make it stand out from others of its type. I guess some would argue that the violence (and there is nowhere near as much as in films like "Saw" and "Hostel") is gratuitous but it is not a blood bath type of film, more of a sadistic and deeply unpleasant one. These sort of films are so difficult to rate. Give it a 4 or a 5 and say "excellent" and you wonder if you are quite right in the head to think something so uncomfortable to watch is good. Those who find anything of this sort disgusting
